What is a motion spring (part of the engine/head)? How many of them are there? What happen (bad thing?) if they go bad or fail? Many thanks!

Sounds like you are refering to an LMA - Lost Motion Assembly

This is used to preload the VTEC cam followers(12) and keep them from flopping around when the engine is not in VTEC mode. They are spring loaded plungers with an oil filled chamber used to cushion them. The symptom for these not working correctly could be a load valve train tap.

These can be found on page 6-36 in the online service manual.

Larry has it down to a T.

These start to become noisey around the 80-150k mile mark usually depending on how religious the owner was with keeping his oil refreshed. They are somewhat expensive to replace as the rockers much be removed, however, they should be done once they begin to stock to prevent valvetrain wear.

This design is much better than the oil piston type found on the 1991-1999 NSX. Our retrofit kit is MUCH cheaper (by 2/3's) than buying the plunger type, lasts longer, and allows high valve lift if you ever decide to do aftermarket cams (although they work fine with stock cams too).

We use these on all our stock engine rebuilds and high horsepower engines.
