What happens when you shift incorrectly

No, it doesn't. Doug H went through a motor doing this (check out nsxfiles.com) and I'm sure it happens more often than anyone will admit.

I had a built motor from Archer Racing put in my Eagle Talon a couple years back and as I was leaving their shop I found a slight misalignment in the clutch linkage they missed and did the 5 to 2 shift at speed. My little 4-popper saw the high side of 9000 rpm (I normally shift at 7k). The amazing part is after they fixed the linkage, it was fine! I've got over 57k on that motor and its strong as hell. Call me "Mr. Lucky."

Yes, there is a lockout to prevent shifting from 5th (or 6th) to reverse, but there is no "bone-head downshift prevention mechanism"!

Only in the six speed transmission. You are fully able to shift into reverse in the five speed at road speed. Makes lots of grindy noises:o

You are personally familiar with this?

I am very familiar with mis-shfting due to the fact that I accidently mis-shift from 3rd to 2nd, instead of 3rd to 4th doing 120mph, which is the rev limiter for the third gear. The result was EXPENSIVE to say the least. The NSX's engine is very strong though, if the down shift happen quickly, it will survive, but if the driver couldn't react fast enough, get ready to pay.

ncdogdoc, I don't know about yours, but my '91 5-speed has a lockout from 5th to reverse! Am I just a lucky one?

Well, there IS at least a lockout to first gear over something like 10 or 15 mph.

BTW, was it the intense compression that blew his engine apart? Meaning, from the road basically driving the shaft at, as one guy on that thread put it, "eleventy billion rpm" and being totally out of sync with the engine's own timing.

Whatever the case... yuck. :p

Ouch! Look at the "pistons!"

Phew...i always thought my synchro-mesh was going!! Thought I had the only car that couldn't downshift into 1st over 20mph. It sucks too cuz our 2nd gear is a long ass gear (which means if im going 15-30mph and someone wants to run...forget about it.

I know we do have a lock into reverse...almost did it once when i was really impatient....grrrr...sent chills down my spine knowing i almost ate it

After reading through the posts on that other site, I find it interesting how some of them got mad at people who sign up to comment on the engine. Everyone has to have a first post, maybe they should be happy the forum is getting more people visiting it, I know after reading those posts I won't be back.

It is also amazing to me that some people think that this was a problem with the transmission and not driver error. It seems in society today no one wants to be responsible for their mistakes.

Those things look like baked potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil.

I have this fear of teaching my fiance how to drive stick that once she starts driving my car, this could happen. I'll have to show her these pictures, in order to etch in to her memory what will happen if she misshifts. That way, she'll be deliberate in which gear she's going in to each time. You can never be too cautious with someone just learning.

Damn!

That looked really bad...I'm going to be extra careful not to do the 5-2 downshift!
