What do you use for numbers on the side of your car?

I enjoy the aluminum bodies of our NSXs, but it's not very conducive to using the common magnetic numbers that other people use for their cars. What are some of the solutions you guys have come up with to label your cars for track events? I'm sorta getting sick of using shoe polish on the rear hatch, and I'd like to have something reasonably professional-looking as well.

Thanks! :)

Vinyl stickers or masking tape have worked well for me in the past. I just don't apply it to the painted surfaces of the car.

Can you get big vinyl numbers anywhere? Something like that would be great, but I don't know where to get them. The online places I've looked at only deal in really large quantities or smaller-sized numbers.

I had peel-n-stick numbers made at the local sign shop. It looks professional and doesn't hurt the paint.

Static cling vinyl. No fuss, no mess. Do a google and you will find some.

These guys do all sorts of vinyl applications. Although they are not local for you I know that they can ship whatever you need and it probably won't be too expensive. I've seen their work and it's amazing what you can do to a car with stickers.

Yup. Die-cut vinyl stickers work fine. Get the kind that have two backing sheets with the numbers between them.

I've used this place in the past. But local sign shops should be able to help you.

If you put the numbers on the side of the engine hatch glass, you don't have to worry about them scratching the finish.

If you don't care so much about how they look, but you want a better alternative to shoe polish, get an Action Writer. Those are the markers that used car lots use. The Action Writer has two big advantages over shoe polish: (1) It doesn't run when it rains; and (2) It's easy to remove, just buff off (like a white board marker).

I'm interested in this, too, because it would be reusable. Will it stay on at high speeds?

As for the die-cut adhesive stuff, does it come off easily when you want it to? Is there any way to re-use them?

I went to a local artist's supply store (Dick Blick), and bought 6" vinyl stick-on numbers. A pack of 2 each of all digits was about $12.00. That way I can come up with numbers no matter what I am assigned. I use them on the rear glass, next to the door handles. I have successfully but carefully peeled them back off after use, and stuck them back on the wax sheet and have reused them. I tend to get 2 or 3 uses before the stickyness wears out. These numbers are on a single sheet, so you peel them off and then apply them.

The numbers shown on my picture to the left here are the numbers they give you at Road Atlanta at a Panoz track day. They are similar vinyl stick ons that can be reused, but they come between 2 sheets, so you peel off one, rub it on the glass, and then peel off the 2nd sheet. A bit easier than the single sheet jobs.

I know you guys are going to jump all over me on this but since I have to use my numbers at least once a month (as well as class letters) I had to find a cheaper way of doing it. Painting them on or perminate vinyl was not an option. I tried static cling but just couldn't make them last more than a couple of events. In SCCA you cannot put numbers on the glass.

Soooooooo....

I had a standard magnetic mat made with the numbers and class and I use two-sided tape to stick them on the doors. Just a minute - before you freak.... The trick to this is two-fold. You have to have a clean and well-waxed surface and you can't use carpet tape. You need to find a 3M product that is used for other things. I get mine from a TV/film expendable supply company. It rarely leaves any residue but takes 2 hands to it pull off. It ain't going anywhere even at 100+. Even if any sticky is left behind, any good, safe cleaner takes it right off.

OK, let me have it.

Hey, nothin' wrong with that! Whatever works. I've seen guys do that at track days often. They tend to use that blue "track tape" - whatever that really is - on the front edge.

How timely ...... I posted this yesterday on our local list!

At Laguna Seca this Saturday with the S2000 (S2KCA)/TrackMaster Racing, I realized that I did not have car numbers. Thunderhill and Infineon seem to be more relaxed on this but Laguna Seca is not.

So a quick rummage search through my last minute of items tossed in the trunk found an excellent solution, from circa NSXPO 2003.

Oh what we do to please our sponsors .... LOL!

Yes the static cling type will work at high speeds. I use them on my race car. In fact, they are legal in BMWCCA racing, while the magnetic type are not. They are reusable. The least expensive place I found (at the time) was:
