That's because he's become much better at giving speeches! His speaking was pretty weak when he was running. He has gotten progressively better. I noticed last year's state of the union address was one of his better speeches to date at the time, and this year he was better again. Though he's still no Ronald Reagan in the speaking department he has certainly improved considerably.
