pol·y·math (pl-mth)
n.
A person of great or varied learning.
I have used this word for years, but I have never met a true polymath untill this week.
Inviting Wei-Shen to our shop and our home, which are often one, has been a great treat for Jane and I. WS came to learn about the NSX, but I had no idea just how much he knew already- about everything.
It is one thing to assume he knows about medicine, its another to watch him analyze a wrist in a 3d MRI study e-mailed to his little palm top computer, while eating pizza and between valve adjustments.
Its one thing to believe he knows alot about performance driving, another to watch him analyze his cars performance in a computer program that reviews your driving skills by using telemetry input- again on the palmtop.
Its one thing to believe he knows alot about computers, its another to watch him update his website from across the country, while eating lunch and using-
you guessed it- a tiny palmtop computer and a dial up modem.
And if that wasn't enough, it was one thing to hear him describe his musical training as a child, another thing all together to listen to him play Chopin, Mozart, Billy Joel, and his own compositions on, a GRAND PIANO. (thought I was gonna say palmtop, didn't you?) True story- this man plays the piano like a concert profesional- it brought tears to my eyes listening to him play.
The ubiquitous palmtop aside, this man never stops learning. Talking to Wei-Shen is like talking to a sponge. I had an idea that unlike some of my students, WS actually was absorbing everything I said. But when I read on his website this morning his description of the workings of a synchro in his own tranny, I realized he knew EXACTLY what I was teaching him.
It has been such a pleasure to spend time with Wei-Shen. I wanted to share with the group my experience- it is what I love so much about the Club and the people we meet-
I hope anyone who has a chance to spend time with Wei-Shen, to go racing with Chin
Motorsports, or to spend a moment when traveling to Florida, will do so and have the kind of rare fun that I have just had an entire week of.
To see Wei-Shens photo essay of the week complete with HIS comments on it, please visit www.NSXFlorida.com
Thanx Wei-Shen, it was one heck of a week.
Cheers,
Mark Basch
