A friend I work with who is an avid autocrosser was running his type R this weekend at a PCA event. He was also asked to help out and stage the cars at the starting area by directing the driver to stop exactly on the "white chalk line". As he was doing this, an elderly man came running up showing great enthusiasm and commended him for doing an excellent job. This man, it turns out is in his high 80's and has been a member of this local Porsche club for over 40 years. Also, his car that he was driving that day was a highly modified Dodge Neon. When it came his turn to run, the the oldster drove the course running into several cones and spun out at two curves. One of the other members of the club told my friend "you should have seen him drive in his day, but he's been here so long, and has such enthusiasm, that we still let him run". Later on in the day when it came his turn to run again, he ran half the course; spinning out on another turn, made a sharp corner.. and then his car slowed to a crawl... and went in a straight line about 1,000 feet where it gently hit a chain link fence and stalled. An ambulance was already waiting and pulled the driver out of the car and took him away. We just got word this morning that the old guy was dead at the wheel. Well.. it sure beats spending your last days hooked to an IV with a feeding tube up your nose! Even though I don't know your name, my hats' off to you sir. I lift my glass to you tonight.
