water pump w/ t-belt

Long time listener, first time caller. I have 93 w/ 43K. I have no service documentation, so I’m having a 30K service done + belts to get it on schedule. The dealer told me they needed to change the water pump and I balked. In my rather limited experience, water pumps usually go out crying and screaming, and rarely all together fail. My main concern would be belt contamination if the pump began to weep / leak.

Anyone here know of any premature NSX water pump failures (before 90K)?

Anyone actually take an NSX to 90K without changing the belt/pump?

I find the thought of bent titanium rods unsettling.

I’m very familiar w/ the concept of fixit while your in there, but I’d rather pocket the $230. for the next time I’m in court for driving a cool red car through a small town of have nots.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Water pumps do fail.

I assume the dealer is telling you to replace the water pump and the timing belt, which you didn't mention. You should do them both. It's time.

Yes. The water pump on my '94 NSX failed with only 23k miles on it last year.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I’ll call the dealer in the morning and have them order the pump.

The driving force behind this visit to the shop is my concern about the age of the timing belt. I apologize for not making that clear.

I have a 86 Porsche 944T (951), and the timing belt & water pump are a huge issues on that car. The water pump longevity issue has been addressed w/ updates, but the timing belt issue is still rather labor intensive(change@30K, tension every 10-15k w/ $400. special tool).

New question:

When you had your pump changed, did they modify your existing lower timing belt cover to accommodate the new weep hole position, or did they have you buy the new lower cover?

Happy Mother’s Day,

Since I wasn't aware that the old style cover could be modified at the time I replaced my waterpump, I just ordered a new one.
