The old NA1 VTECs are definitely detectable by the driver as you described.


In fact, there are (I think) 3 changes that the engine makes as the RPMs increase. I believe that at 4100 rpm, the fuel pump relay switches to high voltage. I can easily hear mine click, especially since I am used to it after so long.


At some higher RPM, I think it is the intake runner length that changes. I can definitely be wrong about this.


Then, at over 5000 (5800 maybe, I forget what RPM exactly) VTEC kicks in.


The 2nd two make the engine growl a bit differently and I can feel a little bump in power from the VTEC change.
