After seeing NSX Tech's post in the vendor forum (for those who haven't seen it click here), I have decided to look into carbon fiber hood options. Aside from SOS' and FiberImages' hoods, I have found out that VIS also carry a CF hood for our cars, it is priced at $650 + shipping. This is a "factory styled" hood, so it won't have vents at all. From what the rep told me the hood uses a factory fiberglass structure with CF overlay, and I was told that it shouldn't have any problems clearing everything in the front compartment; plus, the windshield washer plugs holes are already cut out.

I was just wondering has anyone seen the VIS hood in person? I know getting the hood is sort of boy-racerish considering it's mainly aesthetic, but it's really tempting considering their price and reputation.

VIS's storage warehouse is literally 10 steps away from my work!!

I'll see if I can do a walk-in and inspect the hood, and ask them if I can take a few snap shots so that I can post them here. Will be back soon.....

Look forward to seeing your "report" Zanardi 50

BTW, if you are seeing this message before you head over, please take a few pictures of the fiberglass structure and attachment points. Thanks!!

gotcha buddy.

Just stepped over a min ago from my work to say hello to the Boss. Chris is his name. Really nice fella

He has a sample of the OEM hood in stock (straight black finish only), and will bring it down for me to take some pics of later on this afternoon. If anyone's interested, he also makes scooped hood but he doesn't stock it. According to him, his NSX customers don't like the idea of rain going into the vent and water end up inside it. Personally I don't know any NSX'er that drives his/her NSX in the rain. Go figure.

Anyway, I'll see if he has any pics on this scooped hood, and will post it here if he does.

Why is it that few people beyond SOS list the weight of their CF parts? Personally, that is the only reason I'd buy a CF hood unless I did the TAITEC or 2002 NSX-R underbody trays and I had to divert airflow up. And even then I'd want to know the weights!

The reason is simple. The factory panels are incredibly light. Have you ever lifter a fender? It feels like you have a couple soda cans in your hand. Aftermarket panels generally have more volume (they are wider, have ducts, etc.)

Even replacement panels made from dry carbon that are the same specifications as stock will not see significant weight savings. Panels aren't the items to concentrate on for weight savings on the NSX.

Cyan,I am assuming your getting their INVADER (vented) hood, b/c I know they have the factory styled hoods in stock. Anyway, if you are going to pick up the hood, please take a few pictures of their factory styled hood for me, thanks in advance.

Sorry for the long wait, fangtl. I've been busy playing catch-up with work for the last 6 days or so.... Again I apologize.

Anyway, here's the deal: THEY (VIS) ARE, FOR THE TIME BEING, OUT OF STOCK!

BUT, the -GOOD- news is, they're getting a new shipment in November that promises to be better-designed than the current one straight from the Land of the Rising Sun. Better-designed, which also means lighter and stronger, if my memory serves me correct. So if you don't mind a little wait 'til then, I'll get some pics to you when they show up at their door. Until then, I only have pics of their S2000 CF hood. I've taken some pics of the attachment points as well, which can give you some indication on how structually rigid their hoods are. So if you want, I'll zip themn right over to your mailbox. All you gotta do is just whistle.

Later.
Bill

P.S. FYI, if this bit of info is of any significance to our topic, the S2000 cf hood weighs about 20lbs., according to Chris at VIS.

uh-oh, looks like Cyan NSX beat me to it.

So VIS told you they're getting their shipment in 2 weeks? Probably the older model, not the new one.

I'm crious, how much are the distributors charging for the cf hood? From what the boss at VIS told me, they are retailing for $750.00 or so. If you want, I can get it from him for less (qty. limited of course-he's just being a nice guy doing a favor for his good neighbor and a few of his friends that are interested in the hood --lucky me!

) Cyan NSX or Fangtl, if you're interested, let me know.

Zanardi, no problem man, thanks for taking the time to help. Shoot those pictures over to [email protected] when you get a chance, thanks a bunch.

FYI, I had a VIS hood on my ITR, although it didn't need hoodpins, I installed them nevertheless. The hood would visibly be flapping around as the speed nears 80 mph, once you are over 100 mph, the front of hood is basically doing the hula in your face. So again, for to be on the safe side, install hoodpins.

I have one of the *newer* (or so im told) versions VIS carbon fiber hood on my Type R. The quality is damn good honestly. Fits perfectly. CF weave is very nice. And I have run the hood with no hood pins for a few months and the hood has held up wonderfully. It doesnt flap, shake, nothing. Absolutely still even at speeds over 100+ I couldnt be happier...unless I had an NSX with a CF hood.
