Virus Warning!

This is a warning about the KLEZ virus which may be being spread throughout the NSXPrime community.
(Lud, I know this should probably be off-topic but felt it important to warn our members through the most popular forum)
It was sent containing originating references to two NSXPrime members & of course to me, a third.

I received an e-mail looking like it was from (member A from Prime) but in the details of where it originated it actually came from (member B). (Member B) could have gotten it from anyone, not necssarily (Member A).
These klez type viruses have ability to send out e-mails containing the virus to people in your address book. They contain an attachement that looks innocent enough, possibly a zip file, with minimal text in the content matter.
I don't recall ever exchanging e-mail with (member A), but recently communicated with (member B) regarding some parts for sale - it is quite likely originating from (member B), but using (member A) as the "fake" sender from the (member B)'s address book- it likely will be transmitted to all parties in the address book, including (member A) & possibly a significant number of other NSXPrime members who may have responded to (member B)'s "parts for sale" ad.!

The links above are details & a couple of tools to clean it if you don't have a virus detect & clean product (if you don't you really should get one!)
I hope you find this warning useful & can protect yourself if you get it sent to you.

This virus and several variants have been around for awhile and, unfortunately, they don't seem to be leaving us any time soon. I still receive infected e-mail messages daily (sometime as many as two dozen messages) on my old AOL account.

I always avoid opening attachments (I usually e-mail the sender requesting confirmation of their intentions if it seems important), and, as such, have managed to avoid being infected. Other members of my family weren't so careful and I ended up having to clean their computers (and the virus took some important documents with it).

So be careful what you open....

With the Klez virus, check the internet header of the virus e-mail you received. You'll find the address of the person who actually sent it in one of the fields.

That's what I was referring to in my original post
I received an e-mail looking like it was from (member A from Prime) but in the details of where it originated it actually came from (member B).

I also have received numerous KLEZ looking files from unrecognizable sources (usually spam sources) & I delete them without even opening. The fact that the "supposed sender" was a 'Prime member & the "actualsender" was too is what promted me to bring attention to it.

Gotcha.

FWIW, I received a bunch of Klez-generated e-mails from an NSXprime member some months ago, but haven't gotten any recently.

...an even easier solution: don't use Outlook or Outlook Express as your e-mail client.

I haven't had an email virus problem in 3 years (dare i speak too soon)

I don't!
That is only the means of re-transmitting - it does not nean that you can't receive & be infected using any other e-mail client. It can cause other damage to your files, it is not simply a harmless nuisance that re-transmits itself from party to party.
