Xavier,

I haven't scheduled too much yet because, I wasn't sure when I would be taking delivery of my new house. However, since closing has been set for 2/17, I will be building a schedule and I definitely want to do the Grand Course.

WoW.. that is one lone track!!
Xavier, how is the VIR compared to the Watkins Glen?

Both tracks are great and have significant elevation changes- VIR's is over 100ft. I believe (think 10-story building). VIR's "full course" is approx. 3 miles and the newly-configured "Grand Course" is North America's longest at just over 4 miles. VIR gets the nod from me because of its MUCH larger runoff areas- and almost total lack of concrete walls in runoff areas.

Mark B- VIR Grand is also open in June. www.mazdadrivers.com I will be at VIR Full on Easter weekend (in a Lotus Elise) if you make it to VA then. Dinner at Outback again??? -Howard

VIR is a very challenging.... there are points to it that will allow you to push yourself beyond the limits... safely. The grade changes (especially on the south cut-through end of the course) are absolutely amazing.. when driven very aggressively you can easily upset the balance of the car and yet still be in control.

Watkins Glen is challenging also.. but it poses a major threat to the car. You can push yourself but do so at a rather conservative level. But I have to admit.. doing the esses at high speeds is WAY fun... and sadly.. i'd have to admit.. although i don't like the walls, they are what makes it rather fun too.. the whole fear/adrenaline thing.

But overall, VIR is my home track. The facilities are beyond astounding and with so many configurations i can keep going there and still be challenged every time i go.

that's my .02

There has been some talk about NSXPO at VIR but the problem is the local area is rather boring. Nothing really exciting about the place. Like EVERY racer knows about Texas Steakhouse at VIR....

Heh.. being my home track am I now more down w/ the *locals* (pedro say nothing).

like watkins had the corning museum and a boat n stuff..

I've driven at VIR for several events, and I think the Grand course would be neat, but I think I would miss the velocity at the end of the backstraight, and the immense adrenaline rush from going just past the 1 before hitting the brakes!

YES! does anyone have lap times from VIR and of so what kind of mods on car and what were the conditions like? I am racing there in 4 weeks!

I ran a 3:30 lap time at an HPDE on the grand course. That was roughtly in the upper third of the instructors times as a guestimate. It's a normally aspirated NSX with NSX-R suspension and R compound tires. Here's a link to an in-car video of the grand course:

VIR Grand East video (18 megs)

Jeff

Jeff is that the FULL course? I know that VIR runs three configs North course, South course and full course..whats the GRAND course?

The video shows the grand course. It's the full course plus the east course which the added in the middle of the long straight. Apparently it's the longest road course in the US at 4.2 miles and 32 turns. The map posted above shows the grand course outlined in red. The "full course" title in the middle of that map is misleading.

BTW, there were some Busch series racing trucks there practicing the day I took that video, that's who's blowing past me going into Sucker's Chicane.

Jeff

Got it Jeff thanks..I have run the Long course before but not the Grand course in another racecar but not my NSX..was curious

Fun track. I consider it the second most fun of the 25 tracks I've driven, after Mid-Ohio and just above Road Atlanta. I highly recommend it.

It's called the "Full Course", not the long course. The Full Course, of course, is the outside of the track, and is 3.3 miles long.

Another configuration I've heard of is the "Grand East" configuration. It includes the outside loop of the Full Course, plus the inner loop of the Patriot Course; however, it connects the two from the eastern stretch of the track, beginning with the part labeled UPHILL on the above diagram, going around the inner loop (the west end isn't shown on that diagram), and returning back to the outer Full Course with the part labeled HOOK above.

A more complete diagram from the VIR website is this one:
