Now, now...this isn't the WHOLE video...just a couple clips of me. But I thought I'd post them now to give you a glimpse at what kind of footage Peter took on Saturday.

Clean lap

Picking up penalties

I added a digital zoom via Premiere to the latter clip (to accentuate my mistakes)...which introduced a bit of interlace artifacting which I WILL clean up if I do similar things in the FINAL cut of the video.

A soundtrack is a necessity since the wind pretty much silenced our cars. And, unfortunately, I will not have time to edit this video before this week's meeting in Calabasas.

Enjoy!

Eric, totally looking forward to the video. Any chance we'll be able to get copies when you're done? I know it's a lot of work. See ya on Thursday. =)

great video... question,
in these autocross events, how fast at the quickest, are you going? do you ever get out of first gear? or is it a stick it in 2nd and leave it?

seems like this type of event is realy geared towards a small- say Miata or MR2 type kinda car? isnt the NSX a little out of its element?

ERic

The course did seem to have very short stretches, and it was laid out as a first gear course. The cars were all in first gear most of the way, except during a small back straight away near the end, where you could shift into second gear. But you had to downshift back into first almost immediately. No one used third gear. It was a little frustrating not to have a high speed area of the course. Maybe next time.

Interestingly, there was an Integra R-type and old beater Civic, both turbocharged, that seemed to turn in equal or better times that many of the NSX's. Someone has all the times, which should get posted.

On the skidpad area there were some pretty awesome NSX displays of burnouts, high speed runs, and power slidding, but I don't know if it was video recorded.

When the turbo kicked in with that stupid little beater civic, it was like ignition of the second stage of a NASA rocket. There should be a law.....

Sweet!!!

You not only picked up one of those penalties, you took it with you a few feet!

LOL!!

I hope the final video will be ready for the upcoming CalCoastal meeting. Since the sound was no good due to the windy conditions, add some music to the finished piece. The effect can be quite good. Take a look at a video I did a year or two ago:

We at Factor X Motorsports would like to thank all the organizers and participants of the autocross event. It was a blast!

We seemed to have lost a few turbo chargers from our cars... Both the Type-R and Civic dx were NA and fully built and tuned by us. The Civic was the original test bed for our SCORE off-road clients, therefor she is a bit more vocal than others. I personally think she is a bit too loud also

The Type-R is a real sleeper, she held her own against a few SC'd NSXs both on the course and on the top end. There will be quite a few of them showing up on the road soon.

That is amazing! I was so sure that they were turbocharged, I didn't even ask! What's all that explosive afterburner sound from the Civic when it gets into the mid-range rpms? It definitely sounded like something kicked in. Did these cars have NOS then?

VTEC is a beautiful thing!

Sorry, but that won't be possible. I have no time and, even worse, no harddrive space. I plan to upgrade to an 80 or 120GB harddrive before I even begin editing the video (I currently have room enough to hold less than 2 minutes worth of video - as evidenced by the two clips I've posted)...and I may wait until I get a brand new computer to get the larger drive rathern than deal with juggling my current data.

Since there's so much interest in seeing the video on Thursday, I do plan to show the raw unedited footage. We'll just leave it running in the background.

I think we shot around 1 hour and 20 minutes worth of footage...but I don't recall seeing much from the skidpad. Pete and I did get some footage of Factor X's crazy Civic and ITR.

Even on stock cars, the increase in volume at the VTEC crossover point is far more pronounced on the Integra Type R than it is on the NSX.

Factor X, can I ask what kinds of services you've done to those cars, and whether you will be (are) offering them for the NSX? The mods shown on your website are described in fairly general terms (e.g. "engine building"). Can you be more specific?

Factor X Motorsports:

My NSX has VTEC and a relatively loud Tubi exhaust, but when I hit the VTEC transition under full throttle my car doesn't sound like some kind of blast-off rocket. That Civic made a blast-off sound that I've never heard from an NSX, including all the various supercharged and NOS cars at the autocross, including those using the length of the skidpad area, where you could get into the VTEC range in first and second gear. The Civic also seemed to be spewing a lot of visible exhaust stuff from its exhaust pipe coincident with the sound increase. My wife and I watched this happen several times, while he blasted up and down the length of the skidpad runway area. If that was only "magic tuning" of a normally aspirated Civic, I'm more than impressed. I'm incredulous. Maybe I should spend a few hundred $ on your magic tuning instead of ~$5.5K on a Basch Boost supercharger. Perhaps you could post the Civic owner's contact information (with permission) so I can do some diligence first.

Hey Eric, that should fit nicely on a VHS tape! I don't suppose you could dump the video to a few VHS tapes for the Thursday CalCoastal meeting? I'll bring $$!!

Ooops

. I never took the time to shift back into first gear after the straightaway. I just kept it in 2nd gear the rest of the run. I wonder how much faster I woulda been if I had downshifted -- enough to shave off the 3 tenths of a second between Marc W's fastest time & mine? (Grin!!)

This event was such a blast.. I can't remember ever having so much fun driving a car

. Many thanks to everyone who put it together. Can't wait for the next one!

See ya'all Thursday!

It's my policy to not let people copy "raw" footage (normally I wouldn't even SHOW raw footage). You'll have to wait until I've had a chance to edit the material.

I *think* I downshifted back to first after the straightaway, but am not 100% certain.

What I forgot to mention to you guys was that I did the entire morning session with my climate control set to 72 degrees!!!!! I couldn't believe that I left the damn thing on. Of course, with Camarillo so cold that day, I doubt the a/c ever kicked in. But still...

This event was such a blast.. I can't remember ever having so much fun driving a car.

I feel the same way!

NEXT on the agenda,
Prime Canyon Drive: Part 2
Coming in late May, early April to a canyon near you!

Thanks to everyone who showed up and helped make this a very well organized event and to FactorX for their support. I was one of the lucky Civic riders, and what a ride! This is a shop car owned by FactorX. From my understanding, it has never had the head or the block apart with 80k on the clock, and stock clutch to boot. A lot of tweaking from them put this Civic into the 13's. It's nick name is Betsy.

Since the AutoX was such a success, the plan is to make this a semi-annual event at the Airport. Ideas and suggestions?

Thanks to all who helped and donated time, effort and enthusiasm. It all counts!
DAMN WIND!

Take care,
John Richards

Hey Factor X Motorsports Guys:

I just realized that I may have misunderstood something above regarding the Civic and Integra. Am I correct that you guys didn't just tune the stock cars, but you may have completely rebuilt the engines and specially tuned them, which may include high performance cams and pistons, etc. Is this true or what?

"Factor X, can I ask what kinds of services you've done to those cars, and whether you will be (are) offering them for the NSX?"

nsxtasy: The civic (owned by Racing Group Ikon) was built in 1998 with Factor X Spec cams and valve springs, titanium valve spring retainers, flywheel, and our tuning. The head has never been off the block and the car has been running in its current state for over 80k miles. The Type-R was a complete build to our spec. Due to our policy, that is about as specific as we can get with our clients vehicles without their permission. As far as the NSX is concerned…just remember patience is a virtue.

"The Civic also seemed to be spewing a lot of visible exhaust stuff from its exhaust pipe coincident with the sound increase."

nsxy: The civic needs a new Catalytic converter.

"If that was only "magic tuning" of a normally aspirated Civic, I'm more than impressed. I'm incredulous. Maybe I should spend a few hundred $ on your magic tuning"

nsxy: Both cars did have our “magic tuning” along with various hard parts that we produced and/or selected. Hard parts are only as good as the tuning that goes along with it. I think we need to spend a few hundred $ on a dictionary or thesaurus
smile.gif

"Perhaps you could post the Civic owner's contact information (with permission) so I can do some diligence first."

nsxy: We will talk to the owner about a conversation. I’m sure the RGI (Racing Group Ikon) team will be more than happy to talk about Betty or their 800+hp 2.2 Vortech Supercharged drag car.

Factor X Motorsports

Anybody know if the times have been posted yet? I got a chance to take a look at them on Thursday but was wondering if there was a copy floating around somewhere.
