video footage/clip source - can you help?

folks,

our son turns 30 in a few months and i'm hell bent for leather to create a 60 minute "this is your life" dvd, complete with childhood pics, home videos, video interviews with his childhood friends, etc.

mixed in with these things, though, i'd like to have fade in/out of 1975 - present news/social events, etc... things like (sadly) when the challenger blew up, when americans were taken hostage in iran, 9/11... and some positive and good things, too.

so i'm wondering, can any of you recommend to me where i might find these types of files? i'm thinking public domain or purchase, either works for me - they just need to be legitimate for me to use (this is for personal use only, btw).

I'd recommend trying this place http://www.historychannel.com/ Hopefully there are some videos you can use. PBS.org is another place I'd look for footage.
