Vapour barrier install in NSX doors

I read a great article / writeup that someone did. I can't remember if it was NSX but either way, it was great write up and wondering if anyone knows of it.

Mine is torn, half sticking to the adhesive and I plan to take it off completely and redo this a la, "fresh from factory install".

Any good pointers would help. i.e. best chemicals to use to get rid of existing adhesive, any gotchas, etc. Thanks in advance.

In my experience with the adhesives, it's best to remove it without chemicals. In a garage queen, it peels off pretty easily and you can just roll it into a ball and use it to stick off the remaining adhesive. If it's hard, you might try a plastic spatula from the hardware store.

I removed my moisture barrier and I have Dynamat Xtreme in it's place.

thanks for the tip. You're right, the adhesive now comes off quite nice and is harder rather than really goopy. Any idea what that stuff is so I can get some a the local Home Depot?

Look for a non-hardening caulk that would be suitable for the car environment and temps. You want to find a caulk that stays soft and tacky. I think the little home improvement stores have a better variety of products like this sometimes.

Not sure if you planned to make your own or buy the OEM seals ...

In case you need them OEM part #'s are
72361-SL0-000 (Driver's door seal)
72321-SL0-900 (Pass. door seal)

Check with a local body shop & ask them what they use ...
Try searching through here to see what 3M product could be used.

For the white glue that holds the seal onto the door, check with your local Honda/Acura dealer for this part number 08712-0003.

Are there maybe some more (missing) numbers there Eddy?
When I cross reference in Honda parts guide is not a valid number as-is.

No numbers missing. Not all Honda part numbers are in the 5555-XX0-000 format. And also, non-parts materials (such as oil, fluids, glues) are not listed in the car's parts catalog. They are typically found in the service manual or service bulletins.

In any case, called your dealer, it has been verified at a dealer.

Thanks guys. D'ecosse, thanks for the part numbers, I ordered both of these.

Thanks Eddy, I'm going to grab the white seal from the dealer as well. You guys are awesome!

Does the new seals also come with the plastic vapor barrier? How much are these parts new?

What I ordered were the 2 plastic vapor barriers. I'll also have to pick up the Sealer as well. The vapor barriers are approx. $41 per side and I'm not sure how much the sealant is but I assume it's $10 - $20.

Finally getting around to putting my vapour barriers on and the dealers (Honda / Acura) have no clue about this part number and for that matter most have no clue about what I'm talking about.

After some searching... I think I've found the exact product as this company also supplies Honda Manufacturing.

http://www.zahabiya.com/documents/SEALINGGUM.pdf

I've contacted them to direct me to where I could obtain some of thier product since it looks like they are a large supplier and probably won't supply to a DIY car guy...

Basically, the vapour barrier is nothing more than a sheet of plastic with several cuts for your wire-harness and the door latch and such which is stuck to the inside of your door with a very long-lasting adhesive.

What I did was the following. I removed all the stickly adhesive by rolling it with my fingers and then peel it off. Not difficult to do but takes quite a bit of time.
My Honda dealer uses a kind of self-adhesive foam-like plastic for this. What I did is cutting a piece of this stuff to the right size and peel of the adhesive protective paper cover to expose the adhesive around the edges and stuck it to the door. When starting on one side of the door, you can cut the slits for the wire-harness and such as you go along. Worked perfect for me and I did not need to put on a separate adhesive to the door.
I will post some pics later on.

Just to be clear, the Honda / Acura dealers can’t find the 08712-0003 part number and have no idea about the sealer. They basically carefully remove the barrier and heat it up to reapply it.

I actually have the vapor barriers I just don’t have the tacky adhesive…

The company got back to me and said that I could have a 1kg sample but I would need to have DHL or some international carrier pick it up from Pakistan. Not sure its worth it…

Going to browse the hardware stores for a caulking that is similar to this.

You can buy the sealing gum from a US reseller. Here is one that sells a 1kg lump of the crap for $18.80.

Google is your friend. :)

Google has not been nice to me lately... been searching for awhile... I think it's an issue with my search terms or more likley the terms that my brain thinks Google will return hits...

Vapor Barrier Sealant, Vapor Barrier Adhesive, etc, etc...

So was there any resolution to this? Were you able to find the Honda/Acura stuff? If not, what did you end up using?

Thanks for the follow up! I didn't think anyone cared!

I ended up ordering the 08712-0003 Honda/Acura part from the US. It basically came in a caulking tube with no label other than the Honda part number. I did not install the vapor barriers yet but when I do, I'll post some pics.

I'm sure Zahabiya is probably the OEM supplier but you can't really get anything from them. Order the part from a US Honda or Acura dealer.

With a Cauking gun, this should be a cakewalk... I suggest putting it on in the shade to avoid the mess and then letting it warm up in the sun, then lay the vapor barrier on top when it's nice and hot/tacky.

Is it just any standard caulking gun that will work? Or are there any recommended brand/models for automotive use?
