Valve cover leaks

Also make sure you use a sealant (Honda reccomends Hondabond and I've had good success with that product) around the corners and ends of the valve cover gasket as outlined in the service manual. The SM calls for reneweing these gaskets at regular intervals - check your service records to see when they were last opened up.

Can anyone estimate the cost on replacing the valve cover gaskets...Parts and labor. How much time would it take?

jlindy,

IF it is ONLY the VC gaskets you will need (2) VC gaskets (12341-PR7-A00) and (6) Spark Plug Seals(12343-PR7-A00), figure $50-$60 parts and I would say 1 hour labor, so you are looking at about $100-$120.

However, typically an NSX engine at this mileage, could require cam plugs (4) and cam seals (4). Although the parts cost for these plugs and seals are small, maybe $65 total, the labor is a lot more since the cams will have to be removed.

I would be purely speculating on the labor cost since there are a few ways to do this. Best to check with the specific mechanic/dealer first on the labor.

Hopefully you are correct and it only needs the VC gaskets. Please make sure you have it checked out completely first, since if you have the VC gaskets done, and the cams are still leaking you will do it all over again. It IS the pay me now, or pay me later situation.

BTW, my part numbers above are from a 1991 3.0, just to be clear.

Hey Jeff, I’ll help you check it out and do the valve cover gaskets if that’s all it needs. Another source of leaks is the VTEC valves sticking off the driver's side end of the heads. Clean up under there as best you can, the drive it a bit and let's look for the leaks. If it needs cam seals the job is still simple but takes a lot longer. If you aren’t in a big hurry I can probably help with those as well.

Sorry legend2nsx, but you're a bit too far away for a house call.

Sorry for responding so late, but I haven't checked this one in a while. In my situation, the dealer told me that I have a very very minor leak in the valve covers and rear cam plugs. Normal with age. They said that the oil pan gasket is leaking a little too. (5 drips in my garage in 2 months)

The funny thing is that they (the dealer) want to charge me $800 for the valve cover/cam plugs and $150 for the oil pan gasket. What a ripoff...

I have bought the oil pan gasket and will try to do that myself. How hard is it to do the rest? I know that the dealer is tyring to rip me off considering my personal mechanic would charge me 1/8 their price.
