I've never heard of this before. Apparently Costco is providing this service.

Why Nitrogen? Check here and here.

Interesting...

Someone else's rationale:
"Pure nitrogen (N2) has a molecular weight of 28.01. Air is roughly 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen --> average molecular weight of 28.85. Hardly a difference you'll see in real life.

The main benefit of pure nitrogen over air is that air used to fill tires is not dried air, thus it contains a fair amount of water. Thus, your tires heat up faster with air than with nitrogen. In street driving this means very little as you don't drive your car anywhere near hard enough to see a difference. In a race car, you are driving the tires to death and they will get dangerously hot. Nitrogen helps reduce that risk."

I've never heard about helium used on race tires. I don't think the reason they use Nitrogen because the weight. It is because it doesn't contain moisture. Helium is dangerous for race car as it is inflamable.
Helium is an inert gas, and does not burn. I think you may be thinking of Hydrogen, which is highly flammable.

I saw this on TV back in the start of the summer. I think its just one way to swindle people into thinking they are getting "better" gas milage.

I believe nascar uses nitrogen... I could be wrong I just think i remember hearing about it when they had the segment on tv about people filling up their tires with it

Oh the Humanity. ;) :D

Here is what can happen when things are filled with hydrogen:
