Is it OK to buy a used Hans Device? I have a guy selling a 20ME Carbon Fiber model for about $700. I am assuming this is a 20 degree tilt medium size, which sounds like it would be what I need for another trackmasters event.

Thanks for the help guys.

Probably, if you have a high confidence level that 1) this guy is just another garden variety tracker who bought it himself and 2) it visually looks sound, (it has not been in "the big one"). You could send it back into HANS for an inspection, but there's obviously some time and cost involved. Unless there's something that doesn't quite pass the smell test, I'd buy it.

But for that price, it's not necessarily a bargain; if you have time and patience, you have options: the new HANS sport model or one of the competition such as Defndr, R3 etc for $695 plus shipping or less. Do a search on all the options out there if you haven't already. For folks like us, these are just as good as the CF and pro models.

Yes 20 ME is 20 deg.; what you need for an NSX or any sedan and it is a medium (up to a 17" neck).

It's probably just fine. The brace is good for life. The SFI tag is for the tethers and padding, and you can send it back to them when expired.

- Don't guess on the size. Make sure you try one on and know your size so that it fits properly. If needed take a trip and go somewhere and try one on.
- They are currently consolidating their line, so it will be just the pro and the club sport going forward. You don't want the club sport model.

I'll say, get a new one for lower price...
I'm not affiliated with them, but I bought my helmet from them and got this in my email.

Dear Customer

We are liquidating the following FIA belts. As you know FIA belts are have a 5 year life and SFI belts a 2 year life with most organizations. The main reason for this is FIA belts are made from polyester versus nylon that is used in SFI belts. SCCA, NASA and most car club racing groups follow these rules. Many driving groups do not have any such rule and will allow belts for years so please first check with your racing organization so that you understand what is required for your use.

THESE BELTS ARE BRAND NEW BUT OLDER SO THEY ARE NOT LEGAL FOR THE FIVE YEAR PERIOD SO THIS IS WHY THEY ARE HEAVILY DISCOUNTED. We are offering the following:

MQ FIA 6 point system Racer Price $340 YOUR COST $99.95 THEY ARE DATED GOOD UNTIL END OF 2009 so you may only get one year of use unless your organization does not specify this. They are black and have clip-in ends on the lap and shoulder belts and bolt-in ends on the substraps. They include eyebolts and bolts. The lap belt is a pull-up design. We only have three sets left so this is a great buy for someone who just needs belts for track days and wants a top European quality system. Great for sedans or formula cars.

SABELT FIA 6 POINT F1 SYSTEM PERFECT FOR FORMULA CARS. This is a true F1 system. It has lightweight aluminum shoulder belt adjusters, a compact steel/aluminum camlock and sub-strap belts that are designed for lay down type cars like Formula cars. We have blue, red and black left. Racer price $389.95 Your cost $234 THESE ARE GOOD THRU 2011 So you have 3 full years of use. This is a great value for one of the best sets in the world.

Also keep us in mind for your Hans needs. All Sport models are now $695 and this includes the sliding tether system which is the only way to go. We will ship this at no charge for ground shipping and will include a TEAMDI Hans/Helmet Bag (value $59.95). The bag will be arriving mid-February in black, red or blue. Order now and we will ship the Hans now and the bag later at no charge.

Please call me anytime to order at 1-800-275-4667 since this is not listed on the website at these prices. I thank you in advance for your continued business.

Sincerely,

Bob Zecca

Doing an A / B comparison, I personally found the added weight of the club sport model to be significant enough to be unwieldy and uncomfortable. I really didn't like the feel of the sport on my shoulders, and I am in/out of cars enough to justify the small price gap. Which actually, at dealer cost the price difference really wasn't all that significant.

To each's own, but from what we were told everyone that seems to try one on tends to have the same reaction.

Re: OK............news to me

Added weight? All the club racers in my circles have totally discounted weight as a factor. The logic is that properly mounted and tight belts are pulling down on your shoulders so the extra pound would not be noticed. You might want to do the track day guys a favor and draw the line between you being in/out of cars and the track day guy doing 5 sessions a day.

but from what we were told everyone that seems to try one on tends to have the same reaction.
And where were "we" told that?

For me it was a matter of feel. My point is no different than with any such sizeable wear item: try before you buy.

Ted, I am not clear what your point is. The fact is that I probably log more hours of seat-time on-track than 90% of the guys in my region. You can feel free to validate that with whomever you like.

And where were "we" told that?

Speedware. The largest showroom and distributor here in the northwest.

Thanks for clarifying that because that is precisely my point. Your needs budget and criteria are very different from the majority of the guys here. Newbies asking very basic questions might not realize that.

Your right. That's fair enough. In hindsight I probably should have just given my personal observation. I did not intend that specific point to be taken authoritatively if that's the way it came off to you.

I'll be the first to say that I am all about saving money where it makes sense. If their is anyway I thought I could have lived with the club sport model myself- I don't care I would have done it. Usually it's like what is a pound or two for club stuff?

I can only speak for myself and Eddie- for both of us our impression changed 180 when we were in the showroom and had them on for any length of time.

I think with any of the wearable stuff (gloves, suites, etc...) paying for service is a good idea here. I would always encourage everyone to try before you buy with this type of gear- or shall I say before you buy online to save that extra buck.
