Can you reuse the pre-02 bumper beam for the 02 conversion? My body shop said I need a 02 bumper beam for the 02 conversion or he has to do major modification on the pre-02 bumper beam in order to fit the new 02 frp bumper, any truth to that?

Please help...

Thnx.

Henry.

I am by no means an expert. However, when I contacted the Acura dealership, they said they are distinctly different parts esp. if you are running the internal foams etc. of the 02 as well. Upon removal of my old bumper beam it was custom fabbed by the previous owner to fit the Marga Hills bumper so I couldn't compare it side by side. I also had to get new bracketry to hold the bumper beam. Chris from SOS and Downforce should be able to help you out here.

There are only 2 modifications required when doing the conversion

#1 Cut out headlight buckets to accomodate the adjustable 2002 headlights.

#2 Empty your wallet.

You will need to trim the bumper beam for the '02 conversion, we tried installing the front end with the untouched beam, and it caused the entire bumper to stick out several mm and fit poorly. We removed the beam, and it slid on perfectly. Some trimming on either side, and you are set.

The beam is the same. The brackets and supports that hold the upper edge of the bumper are different

new brackets:

new support:

Same Steel Beam.

DO NOT CUT YOUR CAR TO FIT THE HEADLIGHTS!!!
all you need to do is disassemble the adjuster and discard the internals, then trim the adjuster housing

Go to another shop. My car conversion did not require any cutting of the bumper beam. I am still using 91 NSX bumper beam. A new bracket for the 02 headlamp is needed.
Hmmm.... my body shop 'insist' on trimming my beam!

you are the owner of the car , right?
I have seen far too many instances where people get sucked in to having a project done in the wrong shop, including happening to me!
If you have doubts about them... TAKE YOUR CAR AND RUN, - FAR-FAR AWAY! its better than trying to fix the mistakes later ,or wishing you had'nt gone there. The nsx is too valuable a car to let somebody "learn" on.

you're tellin me it's not necessary to buy this part for the 02 conversion?

any other parts on dali's list that are unnecessary?
if there are a few more parts that i can neglect, i might be able to actually afford the conversion

So which is it? Armando, BLK NSX say no cutting or trimming is needed. Others say you need trimming or new brackets and support. I'm thinking you definitely need the support for the new headlights, but new brackets?

I think you seem to all be a bit confused. The STEEL 1 piece bumper beam itself does NOT need to be replaced. The 2 STEEL brackets as circled in the pics NEED to be replaced with 02-05. The ALUMINUM headlight buckets must be trimmed as the FACTORY does in order to let the self adjusting units on the 02-05 factory headlights clear in order to fit the headlights.

Some others say the ALUMINUM Radiator support/Headlight buckets can NOT be trimmed to accomplish the swap, but that means tearing apart $1200 a piece headlights to remove the self adjusters. The factory Cuts the Aluminum Radiator support/Headlight buckets so if you're doing the conversion the cleanest factory correct way is to do it.
