my upper windshield molding is shrinking and starting to deteoriate anyone has replace this item before? Do I have to remove Pilar just for this? do i have to use any special glue or does it just clip on?

item 5 and 6 of diagram

My windshield was replaced 2 years ago. I'm trying to remember if the person doing the install used clips, but I know he also used some of the glass adhesive to stick the corners of the molding down tight. He used a Honda installation kit. but the molding seemed to be a bit long, so he trimmed and shaped it for a quality fit.

Greenberet thanks for the tsb, didn't realize there was one, ftuhy the moulding does seems a bit long when measure but still puzzled me why we have to trimmed it when it's oem

I had the same problem, so I purchased everything,

pulled up the molding and was going to replace it all but it takes so long I left it off you cant even tell it gone.

just curious which parts are needed when replacing the windshield based on the diagram on post #1? I assume #5 and #6 are required for sure. Are any of these parts discontinued? Thx..

To change the top molding it require to remove the windshield. OR you can just pull off the old one else that's on the car and clean it real good you won't even notice it there or gone.

No need to remove the windshield.

The TSB that greenberet linked has excellent instructions. It's not difficult to change.

Once the two old pieces are removed and the upper windshield channel cleaned out, the upper fastener has double-sided tape to attach near the roof. Then, the shiny upper molding is pushed in. It latches to the windshield on the bottom, and the upper fastener on the top.

These should still be available. I bought mine from Acura of Augusta about a year ago.

Thank you all for the info.

So if I were to replace the windshield, will I need to replace part #2 to #6 on the above diagram on post #1 or some of them is reusable?

no you need part 5,6 one is the metal retainer the second part is the actual rubber.

I was told they are on backorder now, I am gonna try and confirm this tomorrow.

I removed mine and never put it back on. cant even tell is missing

So the metal retainer part (#5) can not be reused?

Which part did you remove, the metal retainer or the rubber strip? I imagine there would be a gap if the rubber strip isn't there?

So #5 and #6 just back-order and not discontinue, right?

Definately need both items. The retainer is held in with a strip of doublestick tape. The challenge is when the windshield has been replaced previously, it seems a lot of window guys like to glue the retainer in, which is not how it came from the factory. Last one I did took me about an hour to get the original retainer out since they had glued it in, PITA. If you replace the weatherstrip without the retainer, a few months later the weatherstrip will come out in the wind. Ask me how I know:)......

BTW, these are NOT discontinued, just back ordered.

When Safelite replaced my windshield last year, they used both pieces. No issues since then.

#5 is the shiny molding with stiffener insert to prevent it from shrinking. It comes in triangle shape long box.
#6 is the fastener with really sticky butyl like tape at the back. It is attached to the vertical edge of the roof panel between the roof and the windshield.
Both are still available and in fact, they were in stock last month in Japan.

You will need to remove the outer visor/pillar to access them as the edge of both #5 and #6 are hidden under the visor/pillar.

It takes more time for the preparation than the actual installation.
You need to remove all the old glue before installing the fastener #6.

As Larry mentioned, if the windshield was replaced in the past, you could be spending ages just for the preparation.
The 1st photo is the lucky one. The windshield was from the factroy and thus, the sealant was applied nicely and cleaning was not too bad. Still took long time....
The 2nd one was the nightmere. The people replaced the windshield in the past used lots and lots of sealant and removing the fastener took ages as it just broke in several pieces as it was glued into the sealant.
Then it took several hours just for removing the excess sealant and the old sticky tape of the fastener.

If your #6 fastener is very old or if you are replacing the windshield at the same time, strongly recommend replacing the #6 fastener at the same time.
This is because the existing one could be the old spec, the fastener feature already tired resulting in #5 molding popping out during high speed driving (as Larry mentioned) or pressure washing the car, it could be damaged while cutting the sealant for the removal of the windshield if you are replacing it at the same time (no need to remove windshield just for replacing #5 & 6 as Dave mentioned in above post) or simply the existing one turned into whitish colour and doesn't match the nice shiny black new molding.

If installed properly, it changes the appearance of your car dramatically.
The whitish one in the above photo is the old molding and obviously, the nice black ones are the new fastener with the new molding inserted to it.

Black colour is one of the key colour for detailing.

I did this recently as my original weather stripping was shrinking. Even with the original windshield, it was a really PITA to install the 2 new pieces. Sore fingers are expected at the end of this DIY.

FWIW, the new part #5 and #6 comes with everything you need to install it. The old retainers are garbage as the new #5 has the retainer built into it.
