First of all, please pardon my ignorance. I have never bought a car from an inidividual before :p

I am going to buy a car that is currently registered in Colorado and I want to find out the procedure for registering it in TX.

Aside from the title with the seller's signature, what else do I need to bring to the county office? From the TX DOT website, it said I have to take it for state inspection first. What about sales tax, how do they going to charge me?

Thanks in advance.

:D

The best thing to do is make a quick call to your local county tax office. They will tell you exactly what you need to bring in.

When I bought my car out of state, I think I brought the following (which may be different than you have):
  • Proof of insurance
  • Vehicle indentification certificate (green sheet you get when you have your vehicle inspected)
  • Copy of title
  • Bill of sale*
*You will need to complete an application for Texas Certificate of Title form after you get the inspection. The seller is suppose to fill out part of the form. But if the seller is out of state or otherwise unable to fill it out, I think (I could be wrong) you can get by with a bill of sale that includes names and address of both parties, description of item including VIN and odometer reading, purchase price, date of sale, etc.

Again, it's best to contact your local tax office - They deal with this every day and will tell you exactly what you need.

Congrats on your purchase!

Hey Congrats Bling!!!

I'm assuming you picked up a midnight pearl? I've never seen one in person, so I hope you can join the Houston group for some get togethers!

About registering the car, all you do is drive it back, get it inspected. When you get it inspected, ask them for the paper to assure a Texas title transfer. Then, you simply go to the Tax Assessors office and put the title in your name. I believe you will need to take the original title to them, and then they mail you a Texas title showing you as the owner. You will need to provide proof of insurance along with the inspection paper. Then on the title transfer form, you are asked to write the purchase price of the vehicle. I'm 99% sure they don't require a bill of sale. And then, they charge you taxes on the "purchase" amount. Does this make sense? If not, PM your number and I'll get on the horn with you. I've bought my NSX along with a bike from out of town, so I'm some what familiar with the process.

Regards,
- Z

Thanks for the kind words. I still can't believe I am about to own my dream car.

Yes, it's a midnight blue with 30K miles. I am current arranging the financing and will keep you guys updated.

The tax office will ask you the price you paid for the car. Thats it, no bill of sale or proof of purchace, and of course your title filled out by the seller and you the buyer. Some people are honest when it comes to revealing the purchace price and some are not. At a purchace price of 50,000 your tax, I think is somewhere in the ball park of 4,125. Its your call. The lady taking your money has no idea what a NSX is much less the value. Good luck!!

Sales tax is 6.25% of what you tell them the sales price was. So, $20k=$1250 ;) sounds about right. The registration and inspection should run you about $120 or so combined. Get the inspection done at a local Acura dealer and ask them for the "Green Sheet". The tax office will need it for an out of state car. Other than that, just bring your DL, insurance card, and your check book.

I just did mine on Monday and you have all the information you need from the previous posting. This may sound like a broken record but DO NOT forget the "Green Sheet" when you get inspected they will turn you away.
Also they do not asked for a bill of sales a least, they did not with me. they just asked to write what you paid for it.

Good luck.

That’s so true and funny! When I purchased mine a few years back, I can remember the day I registered it. I was so excited that I had found a clean 91 with low miles. I was so ready to tell the lady behind the counter that I needed to register my “91 Acura NSX, with 36,000 miles”. After answering a few standard questions about the vehicle she handed me the Texas plates. At that point I realized she had not asked me the current mileage. I politely reminded her that she had forgotten to record the mileage of the car. She looked up from the computer and said “it’s an old car…we don’t record the mileage on vehicles that are 10-years or older in Texas”. Needless to say I didn’t get tell her how many miles were on my “old” car. I then told her what I paid for my “old” car. ;)

I am going to pick up mine this weekend. Just another quick question.

- Since I am using Capital One blank check and it requires me to send a copy of the signed and completed title. Does that mean I have to fill in the full purchase price on the title?

Thanks in advance

I use a blank check from them but i used the fully amount of the blank check and I paid the rest in cash. The title that was sent by DMV only had the amount of blank check. Only my bill of sale reflects the full purchase price.

I think Cap One is only concerned is if you used the amount you were approved for so they can apply it to your loan. my 2 cent.

Hope this help some.

I've puchased a few vehicles, but only in Texas. There isn't a space for the cost or purchase price on a vehicle's title. That's all on the registration form for the state. Is it Capitol One that wants the information?

Bling,
I think Ghostrider maybe selling his midnite pearl...something about it not accomodating car seats...You might wanna talk to him about it :)

I was having a handful of Midnight Pearl NSXs to choose from when I made my decision (great for me to bargain). Ghostrider's car one of my choices. I ended up going with this one in NYC mainly because it has black interior, stock, relatively low mileage and the owner is leaving the country in less than a month for military

Just found out that I do not have to fill in the purchase price on the title...

If everything goes well, I will be seeing my new baby in 18 hours

I'm in NYC now and just finished the transaction today. The seller is going to ship it to Houston for me in enclosed trailer. Hopefully, I will be getting it in a couple weeks or so. I already started missing it.

I will def post some pictures when I got the car. Thanks everyone for your input.
