Tubi Exhaust Review

I just got a Tubi exhaust installed on my NSX. I am told things will change a bit as it wears in, but I know there were lots of people asking about the Tubi on the site, so I thought it would be helpful to post a review of what I have heard with it new.

Overall, I am very happy with it. It is not perfect, but it is much better than the stock sound, and I like it better than other after-market exhausts I have heard as well.

Good Things:

1. The sound when cruising around town and when accelerating is the best part. It sounds wonderful, especially with the top off on my Targa. Tunnels are even better.

2. It looks very good, like a well-done stock exhaust instead of something after-market.

3. It is not so loud as to hinder conversation in the car.

4. I don't think I have had the stereo on when driving anywhere but the freeway since installation a few days ago, and I love music. That should tell you something.

Bad Things:

1. If you are playing the new exhaust for your friends in the parking lot or driveway, it doesn't sound that good. The idle is pretty quiet, and the "down" note when revving it is a bit vibrating and harsh, even though it sounds good on the "up" note of the rev. If you want the car to sound good when stationary, I think the RM exhaust would be a better choice. (The RM is good overall too, but I found it the most pleasing at idle and revving, and less pleasing than the Tubi while at driving speeds - subjective opinion).

2. The hum when driving at 3K RPM on the freeway can get tiring over time. It isn't that loud, but it is a bit like being in an airplane in regards to constant background noise, albeit a much lower and far more pleasing noise. This is less true with the top off on a Targa as the wind noise somewhat drowns it out.

3. At $2100 after the '97+ adapter tubes and tax, it is significantly more than other good alternatives like the Taitec and RM exhausts.

But as I said, overall I am very happy with it. If there are other NSX owners in the SF Bay Area who would like to hear the Tubi before buying it, contact me at [email protected] and I will try to arrange taking you for a ride in it (I live in Belmont, and work in Menlo Park near the Dumbarton bridge).

I had Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City (near San Francisco) install mine. He did it for just $65 labor plus about $5 for gaskets and things, and I recommend him highly. He did a great job (the pipes even align well), and didn't even charge me the time spent to go out and buy the gaskets. If he had loaner cars to ease the hassle (he will take you to BART, but BART doesn't go where I live), he would be perfect.

Tubi will not fit between the openings in the valence, sorry. Other recommendations would be TAITEC, Comptech, and GruppeM.

Cheers,

Chip,

My opinion exactly. I do think I find the cruising sound a little more agreeable then you do. I just love the thing. The sound is intoxicating IMO.

Could you expand a little on the fitment? I had a little trouble with mine, got it all worked out. Just curious about the latest "batch". I purchased mine #10, with the first group buy.

It does get better with age, as Tino mentions.

Nice write up.

Thanks,
LarryB

I heard one when it was rather new and I love the up rev sound but when it dropped back to idle, I was surprised to hear a sputtering sound. Love the dual tips and the quality craftsmanship but will that sputtering sound go away with time? If the price was around $1500, I am sure many people will consider it but at a price of over $2K, that is a lot to spend on just a catback exhaust imo.

The down rev characteristic sputtering sounds does not go away with age. Mine has been on the car one year to date.

Hi Guys,
Glad you seem to like the Tubi. A word about deceleration "sputtering". I guess it's a clash of culture. Tubi spent years of research to emulate race car sounds for street use. If you walk in the pits on race day (especially GT/prototype racing) you will always hear the sputtering as mechanics warm up the engines. All Ferrari's I've owned do this even with stock mufflers. I find myself revving both my NSX and 360 just to hear the Tubi "gurgle". I hope I am not the only one. And BTW, yes the Tubi does get much, much better with time.

Hi Chip,

Nice to see another fellow NSX member in the bay area with Blue/Tan.....come join our monthly club lunch down in Milpitas if you can...

Hi Chip,

Congrats on your purchase, I had a chance to listen to Gary's (Danville) Tubi the other day w/ about 5K miles and boy it sounds 50% better than new. Im glad you like it. I may consider the Supersprint from Italy if not I will go with the JGTC from SOS... decisions, decisions ,decisions...hmmmm

enjoy...

I would call it more of a gurgle than sputter. I believe the sound was done on purpose. It closely resembles the blip-downshift-engine braking gurgle sound from Ferraris.

I can't tell you much about the installation. I dropped off the NSX at Hilltop (my wife brought the exhaust in the BMW sportwagon), we went on to SF, and when we got back the Tubi was on. So I don't know what problems or solutions were needed -- Don did not mention anything other than having to go buy the gaskets. Then again, I chose him because I knew he has done NSX Tubis before.

So how should I expect the Tubi will change with time. Just more sound as rev high, or other things too?

No culture clash here, Spent a half day at a shop in town here and listened to a 355 and the sound was very similar which has been mentioned before. The sputtering AKA "engine belch" is a beautiful sound IMO and look forward to it getting better.

Chip,

I noticed a small rise in volume and slightly deeper tone as time has gone by. I just love the thing. I will call it "seasoned".

Tino,

Does that description match with what your ears tell you

Has anyone had the Comptech billet tip exhaust. Mine, on a 1991, is FAR louder than a resonated tip setup I heard on a 97.
From outside at idle it almost sounds as if no baffles. On acceleration or short trips it sounds great, but that airplane type resonance is quite loud for any sustained driving to the point where I wonder if it can cause hearing damage. (Seems like a lot of these systems have resonance).
Also, I developed a rattle. I've heard Comptech warrants these for life. Anyone know if that's true?

Larry, it's pretty much what I notice, a little louder but mostly a more distinctive "grunt" that develops with time.

Can anyone give me a good explanation for the tonal quality change that occurs over time.Is the repeated heating cycles involved in some metalurgy changes?Or does goop build up over time or are you all mad!
