trunk lid stay replacement

(This should really be in the technical forum)

When you buy replacements they come with new ball-sockets if you order the assembly rather than just the strut (next to no difference in price)

If you get them repaired there is no need to remove them.
 
Haven't done it yet: but you are supposed to be able to remove the retaining wire from the ball joint that will release the ball. Use a dental pick, the wire is a circle on the upper end of the ball joint/cup.

Or you can do what 99.9% of the folks do: get a new pair balls

It's a real fight to get them out of the sockets. I managed it, but you need a sharp pointed tool to get to the clip.
Sure wish I had noticed the new balls in the box before I took all that time and hassle to get the old ones off.
