Troubleshooting an exhaust rattle?

After having an Anytime/Borla installed, I now have a small, very annoying rattle between 2500-3000 RPM. It didn't start until about two months later so I assume it's not the exhaust. I have tightened the flange bolts and am thinking it might be the heat shields on the cats. My question is, would it be okay to remove them long enough for troubleshooting or could they be left off completely? Understanding that parking in grass wouldn't be an option if left off. TIA.

Check the welds on the exhaust piping....I had a rattle with an aftermarket exhaust that I could not find until I carefully inspected each weld...I found that a weld on one of the tabs that joins two pipes together had split, causing it to resonate at certain rpm's. Re-welded it, problem solved. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I'll definitely give 'em a look but I still would like to know if anyone has any experience with running without the heat shields on the cats and if it had any adverse affects?

What happened to the Flowmaster?

Flowmaster went in the trash. I couldn't get it to align properly. Wasn't a Flowmaster issue. Was an installation problem. When removed it had already rusted at the welds pretty bad and didn't see trying to salvage it.

I have a rattle after installing my borla anytime exhaust also. look to see if they welded a small bracket holding the tips together on the passanger side. i think that is where my noise is coming from. once it heats up my noise stops. they welded a bracket on the drivers side.

Warranty will cover any issues you may have and either replace the complete exhaust or repair. You can call Borla directly and speak with anyone in the warranty department and they will typically send you a new exhaust at no charge. First and foremost, make sure that the exhaust is the culpret of the noise. After receiving the new exhaust, then you send back the warranteed one with a call tag provided by Borla(you call UPS when you want it picked up). Their telephone number is (805)986-8600. If you need to talk with me, call anytime @ (805)987-7777.
Take care,
John

BTW, More companies should have a warranty department that sends out a new product before receiving the warranteed one back.

Mine only rattles after first starting out at low rpms. I will check it out this weekend and let you know. I have been told that stainless expands when heating up so that could also be the cause. I do not hear mine once it heats up.

I think I may have found mine with all credit going to Barnman. Mine does it only after it heats up and I think it might be on the passenger side tips. They touch a bit between them whereas the drivers side doesn't. I did pull the cat heat shields, inspected all the welds and retightened the flanges trying to rule everything out but nothing helped. Haven't had time to play with it yet but will post results later.

Well, touching tips wasn't it. I am stumped. It's going back soon with a replacement already on the way at no extra charge.

I do think that the three reported here seem to have some commonality around low rpms/heating and that Anytime or Borla would like to know what the common issues might be. Give 'em a call if you have a problem. They're great people.

I can't say enough about John @ Anytime and Seth @ SOS for the outstanding customer support they provided. There are many companies out there that could learn alot from them. :D Thanks again guys.
