1991 owner asking if it is possible to install a used 6-speed trans in place of the current 5-speed? If so, 1) should I upgrade the clutch to a single disc, or stay with the factory style multi-plate set-up? 2) are any other parts necessary for the upgrade such as shifter cables or other hardware?

You might be able to find a used 6-speed for around 4-5 grand, but you will have to have the single plate clutch and flywheel and that will cost another 2-3 grand, plus the removal and replacement (~12+ hrs labor) and the reverse lockout for $600 from Comptech until SOS comes out with its setup. So yeah, a lot of money. But you will enjoy it.

Well, there are solutions to everything.. First of all.. you can get a NEW 6 speed from an US dealer for $3800.. If you really want one, I'll tell you which dealer quoted me that.. Part number 20011-PR8-A61.

2nd.. don't bother with the single disc clutch.. have SoS or DaliRacing order you a 6 speed mainshaft made for twin disc clutch.. They come standard on Type-S Zero and 02 Type-R.. Save you some work.. The part number is 23210-PR8-N00 and retail price in Japan is 22200yen (about $200).. Since you are going to have a new transmission, you can have someone change that for you. Less than 2 hours of labor. Oh, and if you get clever and wants a 02R spec tranny, then you might as well look at my cross reference and find out what other parts you need.

And as for the reverse lockout, there are a few ways to do it..
1) pay someone $600 for an aftermarket reverse solenoid control
2) convert your car to run Motec ~$3000 and have Motec control it for you.. <--- this is a nutty solution, unless you are building a race car!!..
3) get one of this..

number 10 in the picture, put a switch in it and wire it up to the transmission and battery.. when you are going forward.. turn on the switch to engage the lockout solenoid.. when you want to reverse, turn it off. Have someone order part number 77297-SL0-000ZA (even comes in different colors to match your console) from Japan for you.. Retail 950yen (~$9)..

The transmission itself is going to be the big item.. Second would be installation labor.. But that should be the same as labor for a clutch job... So it may be possible to do it for under $5000 or even $4500 after all. :)

Wow Eddy,

That was one of the best posts I have seen around here in many months. Very informative and your research will surely help others in the future as I don't know how many people know this is possible (6 speed for $3500 new and coupled to a twin plate clutch).

Kudos for the awesome work and information. Truely FAQ material.

Now if you could just post that do it yourself whipple supercharger for $2500 kit information that would be of big help.

;)
