i've got a '91 with 130k miles. my snap ring failed last week and acura wants to charge me $10k to install a new transmission... forget that.

i'm looking to rebuild the transmission, go with the short gear set up, and (depending on cost) maybe upgrade the final drive.

weir canyon acura (anaheim, ca) has agreed to drop and reinstall the transmission, now i just need someone to rebuild it.

i've spoken to mark basch (phoenix, az) and shane at autowave inc. (huntington beach, ca). if i go with basch, i have to pay for shipping, but he comes very highly recommended. if i go with autowave, i save on shipping, but they don't have the same reputation as basch does. i haven't heard anything bad about them, but i just haven't been able to find as many reviews.

any advice? any other options i'm not considering? any other specialists people recommend?

if you have any input, please respond asap b/c time is short and i need to figure something out.

thanks,
adil

jon martin at cerritos acura is highly recommended around here. maybe a talk with him would help you out.

yep, i highly recommend Jon Martin of Cerritos Acura.

he built me a new 6 speed type-r transmission for my 91.
turn around time was rather quick.

for the price you were going to pay that other place to rebuild,
you can get your transmission rebuilt with short gears and some JRZ suspension too through Jon Martin.

he built the monster 3.8 stroker motors for a handful of guys in Socal too.
so i figured he does all that, transmission rebuild is not a problem.
that made my decision easy to go with him.

or you could just buy my 5speed transmission and have it put in place.

it'll be a lot cheaper than rebuilding one with short gears and no extra downtime.

I had my 91 NSX transmission rebuilt and installed at Autowave (snap ring failure too). I also had the short gears and type R final drive installed at the same time. Either way, you can't go wrong with either choices.

Autowave in Huntington Beach or Jon Martin at Cerritos Acura. They are without a doubt the best around. If you haven't read good things about Autowave you haven't looked hard enough. They are very highly respected and knowledgable. And there's nothing Jon Martin can't do on an NSX.

Just give us a call we can do the whole job for you it doesn't make much sense having one shop pull the trans and another one rebuilding it. We have done tones of these snap ring failed trans and like you, almost all the customers want to go with the short gears installed in them. In my opinion this mod really makes the car come alive, lets you get into the power a lot faster, lets face it who needs to do 120mph in third gear.

AutoWave Inc. 714-841-2433

I highly recommend Autowave as well!! Regardless of who you go with, I would have one shop do the entire job for you incl. reinstalling the trans/clutch etc. Per chance, IF there are any issues they can't point fingers at anyone else if they did the entire job. Just my .02.
