I agree that some sort of leak stopping additive would affect the synchros.

Correct. The tranny can stay where it is.  Remove the wheel, brake lines, then pop the half shaft out of the tranny/differential.  This side of the half shaft has a clip on it to keep it from floating inside the differential.  It takes a fair bit of force to overcome it.  I used a hydraulic port-a-power and a long screwdriver to get it to "pop."  Remember to wear a sturdy glove on your hand to avoid gashes and such. Unbolt your A arm. Then unbolt the shock tower from the body using the 3 nuts in the engine bay.  Everything can come out in one big piece as I have done this when removing my tranny. Pluck out the old seal being careful not to score the aluminum.  Instal the new seal carefully so as not to bend the metal in the seal.  Deforming the seal will affect its usefulness.  Use the old seal to bang the new seal in, if possible.  Also avoid disturbing the grease installed by the factory on the new seal.  Last but not least, reinstall the half shaft being very careful not to damage the seal by dragging the half shaft's splines on the seal edge.

If you have the tools, parts and know how, 3 hours is enough for the backyard mechanic.
