I am in the process of looking for an NSX 91 to 94 range and would like to know what is the best way of transacting the buy once one has done a pre-buy inspection and flown to another state in for a personal inspection and that is the car you want.

I would like to know how you insure that the car is actually owned by that owner and that there are no liens on the car etc. and that the car is not stolen etc. when one parts with cash and takes "possession of the car"

I am new to this so I hope this is not a silly question.

Thanks

In most states you can call their Dept of Transportation with the VIN number and the Title number (have the potential seller fax you a copy of the title) and see if there are any liens. Here in Florida you can actually type in a VIN online to see if the car is stolen or not. Running a Carfax report on the VIN can't hurt either. You'll see the history of the car which could reveal major accidents, salvage titles etc...

You can always ask the seller to fax or send you a copy of the title, you can see if there's a lien being held against the title, and/or the release of the lien. Another good way of verifying a car is by matching the VIN number on the title with all the VIN # locations on a car, including the motor/transmission and all body panels.

Regarding insurance. If you have full coverage on another car, most companies give you a 1 month grace period to get it insured. Most DMV's require proof of insurance for registration so it can be difficult to drive uninsured for a long period.
