Larry,I would never get under the car without a jack stand. The good part is I don't need to get under the car. I can loosen the drain plug with a 2X4 (resting on the ground against the rachet wrench) and a light tap with a 2 lb hammer to loosen the drain plug. After that eveything else is accessible from the wheel well without having to get under the car.
