I have serious thoughts about trading in my 91' NSX for another car. Can anyone tell me if there is anything unique about trading in the NSX? Is there anything unusual I should be aware of?

I ask because the NSX isn't one of the usual cars that dealership sees or even is familiar with -- so just trying to be ready so I don't get any surprises.

Yes, I am aware of the pros/cons of trading in at a dealership vs. selling it private-party. =)

Thanks.

given your nsx is a 91, the actual value you could get from selling it private is far greater than any "books" or "tools" dealership used... Unless your car is not in good mechanical condition.

Note: A healthy NA1 is far better than KBB's Excellent condition.

This is coming from a salesperson honest perspective. Dealership is a lot more caution about taking a niche performance cars in current market.

What are you going to get?

I'm surprised that even though you state you know what happens on a trade in you're still willing to do it???

Why did you even post this?

What to expect...hmmm well the dealership will win twice:

1. They will give you not anything close to what you could sell it for privately 2. They will make an even nicer markup on you buying another car from them

Man...no car is worth losing your shirt over.:frown:

It will be a very unique experience trading an NSX. The dealership will be extremely cautious because they don't know how long it will take to sell it and will have no idea how to do any reconditioning work on it. Thus, they will just assume it's going off to auction and price it accordingly. Do not be shocked if they are talking trade values in the $12K-$15K range :(

I just ran a KBB and it says $22,175 for a 5 sp with 50,000 miles in excellent condition. That's actually not bad if you're in a rush.

I'd say, don't accept anything under $18,000.... unless you're in a financial bind. And if you're going to go under $18,000, call me!

Don't ever go to a dealership for trade in on an NSX!

I was offered $500-$1000 for trade in at a local nissan dealership!! And my car is in beautiful condition! The sales manager looked at the car from 100ft away and asked if it had AC, then told the salesman he could only offer me $500-$1000!

Right before this, the salesman also drove my car without permission while I was test driving one of their cars! He asked to hold my keys for collateral while I was out, when I came back they had my car around the corner revving it up with 5 guys looking in it and leaning on it! They also had my trunk open (looking for the engin??) Needless to say I was very upset!

You pretty much just answered your own question there..

you are aware of pros/cons of trading. there is nothing DIFFERENT about any car for trading your car into a STEALERSHIP. They want to make money . done deal

Its also about risk.

A NSX on a dealer lot may be stale since the credit market is tightening and having a bank bite on financing a 15+ year old car. A car that will probably be a toy... the first one to default.

Add that to a 90 window on their floorplan a dealer is going to look into their Black Book under rough and subtract $5,000 - $10,000.

My friend's wife works at CarMax & they just took in an NSX as a trade, it was a 91 with 70K miles, they gave him $11,000 for it. Can't believe he took it...

Ouch :frown:

I am guessing since it was CarMax the car was probably a clean title vehicle... I guess it isnt in their retail wheel house so they priced it as a wholesale unit.

Do you know if they retailed the vehicle?

I think it's against their policy to retail a vehicle that old so it probably went off to auction where they made another $1000-$2000 on it.

Hopefully the sales manager probably picked up the phone and found a wholesaler that specialized in these types of vehicles.

I wish he would have called me. :frown:

Michael, I'm not sure how things are done in Louisiana but in the state of CA if that happens you are talking a lawsuit from me for sure....saying I would be mad is an understatement.

I am still in shock a dealer would do this type of thing - you said it was a Nissan dealer???? OMG - why would they risk their dealership to let people drive a client's car without permission is beyond me!

I can only HOPE you walked away, no RAN away from that dealer!
