Towing an NSX

I had a VERY close call Friday. Just had the CTSC upgrade installed on my '99 NSX. It's been a bit tempermental so far kind of like turbo lag with the 02 sensor lighting up stating it's running lean.

Anyway, Friday after work I hop in the car heading home, start it up and what the ----!

Reminded me of Stephen King's "Christine." I held the pedal constant and yet the throttle revved on off on off from 2k to 5k rpm. Very weird. If I didn't practically floor it, it would stall. I think it's the regulator....

At that moment, I had an epiphany. Since I had also put in performance springs which lowered it about an inch, how was I going to tow the car to my mechanic!!???

He was about 4 miles from my office. I decided to chance it and drove the car there which damn near got me killed, no joke.

So the $64,000. question, how do you tow an NSX? I just can't see it on 2 wheels as the exhaust would getted trashed as I believe the front bumper would as well. Any clues?

At least I was in my office parking lot and not stuck on the side of the road. Either way, not the best time to try to resolve the problem.

Thanks in advance......

Are you referring to CT's recently released Smartmap equivalent unit or the high boost kit?

BTW, I just had my slightly lowered E36 M3 towed on a flatbed and it barely cleared. Might be a real trick getting a lowered NSX onto one w/o damaging the air dam.

MC,

Flatbed, period. A good flatbed guy will get your baby onto it without a scratch.

Well, I might be way in the minority here, but when a coolant hose burst in my NSX I toed it back home with a pickup truck and a yellow 20 foot toe strap. Was about a 30 mile trip, and took awhile in the rain, but wasn't eventful.

It was actually kind of fun, you hardly notice the lack of power (since you're used to no power steering anyway).

Anyway, it worked fine for me, and I would do it again if I needed to. Then again, it does require a friend with a pickup truck...

I've had no problems having any of my lowered vehicles put onto a flatbed. After I point out to the tow truck driver that my car has very little clearance, I also suggest that a 2x4 or similar is put infront of the ramp. This usually allows for the car to be rolled straight up onto the bed.

There is a special type of tow truck that can tow a lowered NSX. My 1st NSX was very low and I had a rear wheel come off because it was mounted improperly. The hub landed inside the rim of the wheel keeping the car from slamming to the ground and receiving any damage.

Anyway the point is, the car could not be pulled onto a flat bed since the hub was sitting on the wheel. So a special tow truck was called in. It backed up to the rear of the car and this mechanical arm slid under the car, it then opened underneath and wrapped around the rear wheels. The car was lifted about 3 inches and towed to the house with no problems. They didn't have to use dollies or hook up any cables. The arm just locked around the wheels. It was the only part of the truck that touched the car and it only touched the tires. Pretty cool.

If you read the original post, he's lowered the car since stock, so all bets are off.

Thank you all for the input. Flatbed it is.

But it is gonna be hard to explain to my wife that she can't ride shotgun because that's where I have to keep my 2x4. Then again, maybe it's the perfect excuse!!!

MC, now that you've gotten the towing (and most important) issue out of the way, I'm interested in hearing more about the engine problems you have experienced. Can you go into more detail as to what you had done, who did it, and what symptoms you have experienced?
