TOP GEAR, Nurburgring and a Ford Transit van

Probably my favourite Top Gear. Last time we were at the Ring I saw Sabine there and asked her for her autograph. I never ask for autographs.

Can you show us? Or does it have her phone number too... you little devil you. ;) :D
Little devil here,
My favourite part was when she passed the motorcycles. LOL. That is priceless.

I'm hoping too see her there at Nurburgring when I will go there in 2007 :)

Really just want to say "Hi" to her :D

I have a movie on my computer with two guys in a Porsche 911 (996) GT3. They spot Sabine in the old BMW E39 M5 Ring-taxi ahead of them just before the start, and try to hang on to her. Man, they really did struggle because she was extremely fast!

Wish I could drive as fast on the coolest track in the world :D

Gotta love Nurburgring, gotta love Autobahn and gotta love Sabine :D

Adeel,
I would like to see that film, it must be funny.
I have also tried to follow her and also seen others trying to follow her. Its funny to watch. They stay with her for a while because, as you know, it's MUCH easier to follow someone who knows the track. When she brakes, you better brake too and hard because she knows there is a blind corner there, and you don't!
But after a while nobody can keep up because they realise they are on the ragged edge and slowly she loses everybody (unless you are in a powerful car so you can use the power to catch up in the straights). And she is in a passenger car with 4 people crammed into it! Very amusing.
We (nsxcb.co.uk) are going there on the Easter weekend (see thread http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=696 ). you should come to, it's a nice time to be at the Ring because lots of cool cars and bikes turn up. It's like a show or something, and then there is the track too. There is a museum there. Your day(s) will be full and you will have an ear to ear smile on your face. You don't even need to drive on the track if you don't want too, just the atmosphere is great.
I live about 1.5 hours from the Ring so I’ll be going for a couple of days and would be happy to meet you. I’ll take you round in my NSX if you want (no racing Sabine tho…)
Peter

Peter:

Wow, thank you very much for the invitation :)

But it doesn't go along with my School schedule, and that sucks really bad... You know, important exams and so on... Oh yeah it sucks bigtime :(

Hmm sounds like a really good trip you guys are planning... And you're right, even if I went there I wouldn't have courage enough to drive the Nurburgring track :D I have no track experience at all, but I have great plans for learning to drive on track this season with some experienced friends who will teach me about cornering and breaking and so on.

I really apperciate your offer, maybe some other time :) (maybe a european NSX get-together? That would have been really something wouldn't it :))

Edit: Do you use MSN Messenger? I could send you the movie thru msn. It's 104MB long.
I am trying to upload it to a free host, don't know if it will work, but I'll know after about one hour if it worked :) I'll let you know.

Try this link! Uploaded the GT3 vs. Sabine movie!
http://www.badongo.com/vid.php?file...ng+track__2006-01-02_porsche+gt3+tries+to.wmv
You must see it on the page, can't be downloaded it seems...
Edit: Oh yeah!! Direct link: http://image.badongo.com/0455539500198455/2006-01-02/e5e0eb1e3fa60aec69d170338c96c949.wmv Download it and enjoy :)
Thanks for the link, that is really good. My palms were getting sweaty watching it! Wow.
I managed to download it, took about 1 hour but it was well worth it. That guy following has a German accent (or similar) and he definitely knows the circuit. Could you see how much more superior the Porsche was than the BMW? I know, totally different cars, but really interesting to see the difference. Sabine is having fun! Man she can move it in that passenger car (!), eh?
Thanks again for the link. Anybody who has driven the Ring would be impressed. Wow. No way you’d find me going that fast, though, I don’t know the circuit that well.
Peter
PS to download:Takes about 1 hour on ADSL. Right click, Save As...

Adeel, if you're interested, I did a bit of ranting about the clip over on
http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/forum2/viewtopic.php?p=6577#6577 2nd page.
Got kind of excited! but it IS a good clip.
Peter

Hehe that's cool :)

The Nurburgring seems like a real test for track-drivers

I have a friend who drives a Mini Cooper S (upgraded from 163 hp to 220-something hp) and he always talked about this track. Everytime somebody mentioned a sportscar he would be like "so? It's not THAT fast around Nurburgring" All of the other guys (including me) laughed at him "So...? And your point is...? The Nurburgring isn't the only thing in the world you know..."

But it is very interesting, the Nurburgring track, as the laptime shows yours and your cars skills!

Btw I do have a clip of the NSX-R (the new model, not the 1995 model) where I believe a Best Motoring japanese driver drives extremely hard and finishes in a time of 7,56!! Man the way he drives is absolutely crazy! Like he has no nerves at all...

Sure the car has alot to say but the driver driving the car must know what he's up to, then a great laptime is possible :) As we've seen in the Ford Transit clip, Sabine drives pass some fast vehicles in a van....

Oh yeah, the funny thing is that this friend of mine with the Mini (who btw has record of 9,15 there) bragged about the new Porsche Caymann S and its laptime of 8,11 - then he saw the NSX-R video and really got annoyed :D I showed him a Best Motoring videoclip of a Mitsubishi Evo IX driving at 8,11 - just for him to know that the Caymann and the BMW E46 M3 isn't the only cars good at Nurburgring, he really got pissed off :D Specially when the Caymann was designed by the purpose of being extremely fast around Nurburgring and this Evo IX thing from Japan with less horsepower was just as good... :D:D

I'm getting hooked by this trackdriving and laptime thing :) I'm sooo ready for some serious track-action when the car is back from winter-storage

Edit: Please let me know if someone hasn't seen the Best Motoring/ NSX-R @ Nurburgring clip yet, then I will try to upload it too.

These links don't seem to be working. I'm getting page not found or file not found on the badongo one. Anyone else having problems?

I don't understand why but I'm having trouble too. It was a free service thing so I knew they wouldn't let that link be active for too long.

But hey, it's not a problem, found the same video on google (Google rocks!):

If the Ford Transit video didn't work here's the video on google (as I said, google rocks):

Ok, I’m drooling already. I would love to see it. If it’s anything like the last clip, you’ve got a guaranteed ride around the Ring in my car (hell, you’ve got it now!).

That’s a quick time. 7:56. wow.
But the problem with the Ring -actually it’s the Nordschleife (pronounced nord shlife as in life), the “Ring” is the F1 circuit. The Nordschleife is the old racing circuit. Some 20km. That’s the one on the clip. Sometimes they open both so you go round the F1 circuit then get bumped onto the Nordschleife. Did you see at the end of the first straight where she is stuck behind some bikes, the road narrows and there is concrete on the side in the sharp corner, that’s the rejoining point. But on the clip, it’s only Nordschleife.
So the problem there is the danger. If you don’t know the track, then you can’t make a good time even in a good car. I don’t know the track. That would require about 1000 laps to learn it. If you “think” you know it, then you go alright for a while, then a blind corner appears while you are doing over 160kph to remind you that you don’t know. You crash. Simple. One motorcycle rider dead a week, or something like that.
So you find yourself braking for a blind over crest, and it was almost straight. Could have kept it to the floor. So you loose a lot of time. Then you do that next corner and it’s a good job you DID brake.
But it’s fun.
We tried it with pace notes, like in a rally. Got going so fast we were both sh*ting. So we go slow now.

I have on DVD an in-car Gulf Porsche with Derrick Bell (I think) going around the Nordschleife. It’s good but, I think yours is better.

Whats with all the writing on the track ?
Here in Europe, racing, rallies and bike races are a national sport. Ranks up there close to football. Most are on public roads, sometimes through cities and towns, sometimes in the mountains. So people paint the names of their favourite stars (who are racing that day) or words of encouragement on the track or road.
They have done the same on the Ring.
Things are much more relaxed here than in the States (I presume you are in the States...sorry if not), where the authorities go on a power trip and restrict everybody.
I think it’s nice to see all the paint.

I didn't know about this, that there were a reason that some say they drove at "the Ring" and others say Nordschleife...

Mhm, heard about it from martin. He said that it would be stupid for newbies try to set laptime-records - and that new people only should just take it easy and drive around the track without thinking about the time. And after 50 laps you might be ready for taking time, he said. Will follow yours & his advice on this one :)

Edit: Spelling mistake...

Hi

People also paint there names where they crashed. Those that live to tell.

I have been there a couple of times and there where about 2-5 bikers down for every 20 minutes. It was pretty scary. I survived, but I will never use my bike there.

When they count death's on the "Ring" they do not count you if you die on your way to the hospital. So if you die in the helicopter you are not "dead on Ring".

Deaths is not something that they want to talk about. If it was not for the "Ring" then the whole community would be shut down in a few weeks.

When people talk about "The Ring" they usually mean the Nordschleife.

The GP track is not that interesting they say. The Ring can be a little bit too interesting. I have a video of a guy going around the GP track and the "Ring" in a crazy time. I will dig to see what the time was, but it was just crazy.

If you walk around the carpark and spot some veteran "Ringers" they are usually very nice. If you ask to hitch a ride then you could be lucky. Some will not take you if you do not have a helmet.

The best expirience I had was in a Clio Sport with a guy that had a couple of thousands of laps. And also a other guy in a GTI DTR (Dedicated track rat).

It was a lot of fun, but I got sick in the end and that tells a lot. It was very hard and I was not relaxed, but pretty hyped up :)

Regards

Yeah, I wasn’t going to mention that….you’re right about the “dead en route” part too.

Yes, many people feel sick, especially as a passenger. Me too sometimes. You see passengers getting out of the cars white faced sometimes, but they always have a big smile! It’s the weightlessness then positive Gs, over and over again I guess.
Actually I enjoy the atmosphere there a lot too, and especially the drive down there. From my place it’s mostly through the hills and the closer you get, the more cool cars are seen, coming from the Ring or going. A lot of bikes too, it’s like a race already. It’s pretty cool to be chasing bikes through the hills on the way to the Ring. They even have a couple of signs as you enter a village or two saying “Rasen Ist Aus!” and we all respectfully slow down in the villages. Then the moment we see the “end of village” sign, everybody floors it again. And as you know, you’ll do ANYTHING to pass that camper in front of you!
And I even saw one sign saying “caution, racing motorcycles in the next xxx km” (in German) but somebody crashed into it, and I can’t find it anymore. I wanted to get a picture of it…but maybe someone stole it.
Yes, the drive down there is as good as being there for me…
