Too tall...

So, I got my '91 last Friday and LOVE it, aside from one thing... I'm 6'3" (mostly torso) and no matter how I adjust my seat, my head is always brushing against the headliner.

There's a Prime post from 2002 about the same problem, and people were recommending the DaliRacing cushions that drop the driver about 2". That would be perfect, but my '91 has 2004 seats with perforated leather and I don't want to ruin the look.

Is there a way to fit in my car without having a funny-looking seat cushion that doesn't match the rest of the leather?

Thanks!

Oh, and I should note that I'd rather not switch to aftermarket seats.

If I had to start cutting into brackets and stuff, that's fine with me--especially if anyone has done it before and can lead me in a certain direction.

I have seen posts here before about people reshaping the foam in the bottom of the seat cushion and getting the extra room they needed. I am also 6'3" and have the original 91 seats in my car and i have about 3" to spare before my head hits the headliner. I havent bumped my head yet but it is a little tight. I found that playing with the seating position can afford you a little extra head room but youll likely sacrifice perfect driving comfort for it. I have also seen posts about removing some of the headliner backing which raises it up a bit.

Too tall,,, too bad,, I guess you'll have to give me your car...
BUT,, if you really want to keep it, I believe you can purchase "racing" cushions from Dali or others. You shoud easily be able to take your cushion out and trim the foam. Take the seat out to do this, you can clean it up and it's a simple process. Or just take your cushion to a trim shop and have them do it, I believe if you do a search you'll see other replys like this. Good luck..

May I suggest:

There's nothing fancy about the Dali Cushion. You could probably get one duplicated (and use better foam) with matching leather at a good auto upholstery shop.

are you in a helicopter in your avatar? That's some good visibility and wide seats.

I think reupholstering the Dali cushion is exactly what I'll end up doing.

And yeah, that picture was taken in a helicopter over Maui (an A-Star, hence the good visibility.) It was an incredible experience, and one that I highly recommend!

How do you remove the stock cushion; how is the stock cushion attached to the seat frame?

I want to do the same thing, but I really don't want to change the stock seat irreversibly.

If you don't mind aftermarket seats, check out carboy's Bride Gias Low Max seats for sale. They give you 3 + inches of headroom. The only problem for me was that they were a little narrow for my frame. Other than that, they are awesome. Perfect for you beanpoles out there.

There's a tech bulletin about it but I don't remember the number.

That's too funny, I bet that works though, I'm 6'1" and could use an inch or so myself.

This is an issue I will have to address when I end up getting mine. I'm 6'6"!

Make the seat go forward and lean the chair back, then move back as far as you can with the seat, and as the other dude suggests, take the foam out and reshape it, im sure theres a few inches there to play around with, will allow you to sit deeper too. I actually think you just might be too tall for the NSX...6'6" is very tall, or you could only ride around in the NSX with the top off, only problem there is your head will be stickin out alittle, no worries...im sure theres a mod for that too...Wait nevermind, wear a helmet :)

I'm that tall and fit ok. I fit with the stock seat but the mod made it more tolerable.

Sweet bro, that's good to know. I owned an S2K and it was a little tight, mostly around the knees because they don't have an adjustable steering wheel. I fixed that by putting in a Momo.

Thank You!

how about some aftermarket rails that lower the seat?

Nope, won't work with the stock seats. The bottom of the seat touches the rug already, so there's not much to work with. I'm another one of those 6'6" NSX owners. I ended up trimming the seat foam and getting the seat re-upholstered. I needed a couple of inches of headroom and a bit of width, so the drop-in Dali cushion wasn't quite enough for me. I bought an extra pair of seats from another NSX'r so I didn't have to cut up the original set.

A good upholstery shop should be able to replace just the bottom cushion without destroying the stock seat and give you the intact stock bottom cushion so you can return the seat to OEM later if you want to sell.
