I think my car is about time for Timing belt job. Before that, I have some question :

1. Is it possible to get this job done by myself ?

2. If I go for dealer, how much will they ask for (includes timing belt, water pumb, and others; like windows...etc) ?

:D

How much experience do you have as a do-it-yourselfer? It is not an easy job - pretty darn difficult for someone who hasn't done much more than changing brake pads and such. But if you have a lot of experience at complex tasks, it can be done.

Why not take a look at the procedure in the service manual, and then decide for yourself? (You DO have a service manual, don't you? Because otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking this question.)

Well, obviously this depends on what you mean by "and others". Replacing the timing belt and water pump typically cost USD1200-1500 at Acura dealers.

I would suggest having this done at a dealer that has a lot of experience servicing NSXs.

I would also recommend replacing the cooling system hoses at the same time, as preventive maintenance.

Incidentally, your post has nothing to do with new and prospective owners. This topic belongs in the Technical / DIY forum. Perhaps Lud can move it for you...

I did this job myself a few months ago. I have done clutches etc. but never a timing belt. It was not that difficult but quite stressful as the thought of a mistake is VERY scary. I took my time and had no probs. I have the step by step that Bastanza sent me and it was priceless!! If you get serious PM me and we can talk. The guys on prime are great to help in times of need.

Hey Steve,

I am considering doing the timing belt service.....you have detailed diagrams and procedures? Please let me know....take care.

Helpful Hint

When installing the new belt onto the cam gears and crankshaft, it is imperative that the belt does not slip a cog or two. Wow Andy, you really are a smart one. :p Go to an office supply store and purchase a box of black mini binder clips....the kind that you squeeze open with two fingers. Once you get a partial wrap of the belt onto the first gear in the correct position, clamp one of these clips onto the belt-gear to hold it in place as you continue to the next gear. This will prevent the belt from falling off until you make your way to the tensioner. Done right, you will be able to install the belt one time vs multiple times because it keeps falling off without the clips.

Don't you have a service manual? If you plan to do any complex services on your NSX, the service manual is an absolute must. And while you can browse the copy on this site to look something up, I would think that it would be a whole lot easier to have the real thing (hard copy) in front of you while you're working. You can buy one here, and it's worth every penny.
