First off, I've been reading this forum for about a year, since I bought my car in May 2001. I must say this site is great and I found it really helpful when buying my car, which is a 1991 black on black with 43000mi on it - and I love it!

Now to my question, I've searched the FAQ and have seen a range of prices for the timing belt/water pump replacement, but since these are US$ it's kinda hard to compare what I'm being quoted. I asked for an estimate for the timing belt since I don't know the history and I was told they do the water pump too, and the hoses etc. Fine. The mechanic also said that my cam plugs(? rubber plugs in the engine) are weeping oil and should be replaced if the timing belt's being done. The whole job labour estimate is 14 hours @ CAN$74/hr. Is 14 hours high? I get the impression it is. It was also mentioned that the valves would be checked and adjusted if necessary - would this account for a longer labour period?
The total parts estimate was CAN$1083, with the biggest part prices being:
water pump kit (19200-PR7-305) 1 @ CAN$404.06
timing belt 1 @ CAN$176.11
something that says "adj comp timing" (14510-PR7-A01) CAN$106.06, and
some other cryptic description "pkg set.head co" (12030-PR7-010) 2 @ CAN$91.50
The rest of the parts are mostly under CAN$50 (I got a full detailed quote).

The quote is from the Ottawa (Ontario, CANADA) Acura dealer (Camco) and I just want to have a good feeling that the quote isn't off in left field.

Thanks for any input.

As noted in the FAQ, the timing belt and water pump replacement typically costs US$1200 and a valve adjustment runs US$250. Thus these services alone ought to run USD1450 which is CAD2271. You're getting them for CAD2119 (plus tax, perhaps?) which also includes the repair of the cam plugs. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I agree with nsxtasy that this seems like a fair price. And I think you get some extra value by letting a dealer (or other qualified technician) go thru your car completely. By paying for the 14 hours labor (sorry labour in Ottawa) you get the tech to look around and check everything ..... money well spent if you plan to keep the car any length of time at all.

I just had my 60k done along with the timing belt / water pump and new style cover on my 92.

Jim at Acura of Memphis did the work and did a great job.

Total Cost, tax included = $2200.00
