Timing belt, Cam seals and valve adjustment.. Dealership quoted 1900$$

I got quoted from Acura dealership :Top Engine Reseal, Cam plugs Timing belt service for $1980. Is this price reasonableIMG_1381.jpg?
 
They are under scoping you a bit. Though how do they know the cam seals need replacing?

Depending on when the last time the idler bearing and water pump were replaced, you might want to do that as well...which of course means you need to replace the coolant.

The oil pedestal needs to be removed, so you might as well replace those coolant hoses too. Crank seal too.

And you midaswell get a timing belt guard from TiDave

Yeah, you'll get out at $5K.

I am not sure if Barney Demonbruen still has his shop, but he is a Nashville local and a stand up guy. He was the NSX tech at Gary Force and left to start his own shop - Ashland Motorsports. He is/was known for NSX work, and built my 6 speed with NSX-R main among other things. At the very least, it might be worth a call to him to see what he has to say. It has been a few years ago but I had a good indy shop (that specializes in japanese cars) do my belt service. Right around $1500. Water pump, some upper seals included, all oem parts included. They also bled the brakes. I rarely let someone work on my cars, but I think they did a great job. Saved all the old parts for me. i am sure prices have gone up.
 
I just paid $1700 to have the timing belt done, including water pump, valve adjustment, and plugs. I brought all the parts, except for the water pump, plugs, and alternator belt. I was told it was $900 if I had all the parts. Anyhow, just a data point. This was an well known independent shop with an ex-Acura tech that was factory trained on the NSX back in the early 90s.
 
I have found valve adjustments on the NSX to be rather unnecessary.
I kindly disagree. Modern Hondas can go up to 100k miles without a valve adjustment. After 25k miles I do see the need of a valve adjustment for the NSX.

I do envy you guys in the US for your quoted TB jobs of around $2000. In 'socialistic' Europe, it's 2.5-3 times more than that.
 
For those of you that DIY the TBWP service are you doing the valve adjustment as well?

Yup. It doesn't take long and isn't difficult. Why wouldn't you?
 
So I just got the timing belt / water pump service performed and was charged 10 hours of labor plus cost of parts. This included the valve adjustment which tech commented that my valves were pretty far off spec. Looking at the parts list, it looks like they also flushed the cooling system as I was charged 3 units of coolant.

Where have you got the job done? 10h at what rate?
 
This is an N=1.

I put +100k miles on my last NSX, exactly one valve was slightly off perfect, but well within spec, in that entire time. I adjusted that one valve "just because". I do recommend doing it at least once as a baseline and, barring any changes, I personally wouldn't do it for another 60K miles

It takes 3-6 hours to do the job depending on experience and start point.

It's a lot easier to do when doing the timing belt. However, I don't like doing something like this during a timing belt job because it makes it a bit more difficult to determine if the timing belt is slightly off as the sound/idle might change with the valve adjustment. After a timing belt job, there should be no change presuming the previous timing belt was installed properly. (Again, N=1, my dealer installed timing belt was +1 on the rear cam, its easy to do.)

I recommend a similar tool to this ("10mm Honda Jam Nut Valve Tool") makes the adjustment job a lot quicker and precise. It gives that force multiplier of a "third hand".

Wow. I would check that again in 15K miles to verify everything.

That tool is great for the valve job but for when engine is out. Used it few times on s2000 (no engine out issues obviously)
 
Great guys. Super fair rate too. They know NSXes and do good job in general. Assume this was engine in job.

Couldn't agree more! When I emailed them for a quote they provided quotes for Supercharged and Non-Supercharged so they obviously know their NSXs.

There were two parked outside when I brought my car in.
 
I just had the timing belt changed here in France including the water pump and valve adjustment with all the parts it cost me 3000 Euros.
28 hours of labor included in the price...
