Tie rod?

If a tie rod is bad what noises will it make if any? I do have one bad on my car (rear RH side), has about ½” of play at the wheel. It was fine at least I think before I took the car in to have the CV boots replaced. Now the car when I drive it is making a noise like something is rubbing the splash shield behind the rotor. I have checked it and cannot see any signs of rubbing. The shop is telling me once I replace the tie rod (which I think they f---ed up) that the noise will go away. Is there a possibility that they screwed my car up when the had that side apart. They did tell me that they had problems getting that side back together.

The noise is not constant but rather comes in and out with the turning of the wheels. I am not driving the car until the tie rod arrives at my door.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks for all of the responses… J FYI the bands that come in the new Acura CV Boot Kits are not the same ones that are on our cars originally (they are a little thicker and a taller). Therefore you may here the same sound I was encountering. When you replace the CV boots if you notice a metal-to-metal rubbing noise it is the band on the CV boot rubbing the shield. Check the clearances when the job is completed and you should be good to go.
