I've been in Chicago all my life and am sick of the weather, the ugly midwest girls, and of course not being able to drive the NSX all year round:smile:

Currently I live on the north side of Chicago in the city, and am used to going to hip clubs, cool bars, and awesome restaurants. I'm 33 and single, no kids.

The cost of living seems to be about 10-15% higher in S.D. than where I currently live. I can deal with that.

Any opinions? I'm also thinking of the Central Coast (San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles, etc).

I have the luxury of transferring, as I work for a large consulting firm that has offices throughout CA.

Your opinions, thoughts, etc. are welcome and appreciated. I'm just looking to see what everyone thinks of this possible change.

Thanks,

If I was single and had a steady job I would move to SD in a heartbeat. If you have no REAL reason to stay in Chicago then SD is the clear choice. Start packing tonight.

Paul, You would look long and far to find a place to live with better weather then San Diego IMO. Palomar runs, Canyon runs, lots of NSX friends: What could be better! Look forward to meeting you.

and Tijuana Mexico is only 10 minutes away! Now the Central Coast is not bad either, maybe you can even try a lil south , Santa Barbara county is great , or Ventura County. you're still far away and close enough to LA, its perfect. Malibu is only a few mins away. Lots of NSX'ers. Perfect for drives every weekend.

Dude, San Diego is a retirement community!!! Practically every friend I have from San Diego are no longer living there. S. Cal is big, you should spend some time here to see if that is really your cup of tea. An hour north from San Diego will be nicer. North or South bound for an hour, you can be in LA or SD.

Downtown is pertty nice to hang out but when you drive on the freeway... You will have to dodge those snail mobiles.

SD is a beautiful place.. kinda has a little of everything. The fires of the last several years have been somewhat worrysome though. Thank God I was safe, but a few friends either had damages or totally lost their homes... kinda sucks when the price of homes around here is so outrageous! Good luck to ya!

When I was interviewing with Toshiba in Irvine back in 2000, I looked at places all the way south to SD, and east as well, damn everything was so expensive even then. We fell in love with La Jolla. It was a very new england like downtown area which is what my wife loved about it, plus the seals living on the shore there were very cool. Of course even 7 years ago, the median cost of a home there was $800,000 so that ruled that out, but still... an amazing area.

If you own a home, you might think of moving somewhere with a lower cost of living, like Austin TX (suppose to be good singles city) or another fairly large (warmer) city. You might be way ahead on buying a house with equity/etc that you have in Chicago somewhere like that vs going to highly expensive place. Compare a 750k house in San Diego (tiny) to a 750k house in Austin. (mansion)

C'mon over...the weather is like paradise...average temp in San Diego is 70 deg all year. The cost of living is kind of high, but you can rent a room for a while and check the place out to see what area you like. Maybe pick up a foreclosure with all that bad mortgage paper out there.

I agree with Vance that North San Diego County is the Best. On the coastal side there is Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach all areas of interest.

Go For IT!!! Change is GOOD!

Have you been to any of these locales?

SD is a wonderful city but it's quite different from SLO or Paso Robles.

My wife and I love where we live in Dana Point (2nd Southern most city in Orange County) but I'll be honest... one of the few places in the world I'd move permanently (if I could find work to support it) would be La Jolla or Del Mar. Beautiful areas with fantastic beaches and damn near perfect weather. Traffic is horrible in the summer (but find me a beach community that doesn't suffer that problem) and it aint cheap but that's as close to paradise on the mainland as I've found.

Don't move to California for the weather and women. Oh the weather here is great. But there are more reasons not to move here.

The women are gorgeous, most of them are stuck up.
Property associations - SUCK! (both homeowner and rental)
There are too many people here.
The traffic SUCKS - BIG TIME!! Even on the weekends.
The taxes here are hell - CA has the some of the highest taxes in the US.
Fires and earthquakes, Mother Nature not too happy with CA.
Property and rents are sky high.

Remember the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence. It's not!

There are great communities spotted all along the coast from North of Sand Diego all the way to South of the Bay area. Before committing, you might want to fly out and do a week long Highway 1 road trip to see if some particular place knocks your socks off.

When I first got out of college years and years ago, the HR manager asked me where I wanted to go first. Growing up in NorCal, I said "San Diego!!!!". She laughed and said "no, seriously, everyone wants to go to San Diego and you'll have to work for us for at least 20 years before we locate you there". Ever since then I've been trying to get there . But I might have to wait until retirement.

So, stop thinking about moving there and start visiting to figure out where exactly you want to live.

If you're looking for girls, weather, and NSXen; it'd be tough to beat San Diego. Just be prepared to pay through the nose for living expenses, and the traffic.

The traffic in San Diego is nothing compared to other cities...I can commute 46 miles in 50 minutes, that isn't so bad. Just have to avoid peak periods between 7:00a.m. and 9:00a.m. and between 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It works out great when you work overtime.

Okay, the women can be stuck up...just find one that moved here from the midwest too!

The fuel prices seem to be higher here than everywhere else though. I am paying $3.37 a gal for regular unleaded and $3.57 for Premium.

Don't move to SOCAL unless you're tired of being single... jk..Moved here couple of years ago from Michigan and all I can say is do it while you're young..REMEMBER: "Snowboarding, Fishing, Surfing and Golf" all in the same day..ohhh and NSXing whole year round

At peak hours it took me an 2 1/2 hours to go from San Clemente to DT SD.

Fuel in Las Vegas is cheaper then here in SoCal at $3.07 (Arco) $3.11 (Chevron) for regular, this was last week.

He thinks Mid-West girls are "ugly" (His word not mine.)

Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is all the way through.

You need to get up earlier  I can go 120 miles to the S.F. Valley in 1hr 45 min...but I leave at 3:30 a.m.

I have met some pretty hot Mid-West transplants...not all are corn fed.

 I am solo all week up here in West Hills...

The weather issue is unquestionable, but there was something else in your post that is debateable.

What "Hip Clubs and Cool Bars" are you going to in Chicago where you are only seeing ugly women?

Just curious, as this is NOT reflective of my experience in the same city.
I have seen plenty of women around Chicago that compare favorably to ladies I have seen in Dallas, LosAngeles, Miami, Prague, and Paris. I have also found the women here to be far more down to earth than in other places (most notably: Los Angeles)

Good luck whatever you choose!

Thanks for the responses. I will definitely be taking a trip out there to learn more about the geography in each area.

Yes, there are beautiful woman here in Chicago, too. The problem is the skewed ratios. Another problem is mediocre women thinking they're above and beyond their own league. No, I'm not bitter. Just observant:wink: .

I'm worried about the Central Coast being too small for my liking. I believe there are 1.3 million people in S.D. That's smaller than I'm used to, as well.

A trip is definitely in order. I'll resurrect this post when I'm planning on going out there. Perhaps some of us can meet up and you can help me out.

Speaking of weather, I just bought a 1996 Infinit G20...YEAH!!! We need winter cars here, you see. I'm jealous...

Haha! Advice taken. I've only be to CA once, and that was just wine country(tourist...I know, I know). I definitely need to do some exploring.

Rentals on Craigs list...

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/apa/

There are some decent deals in Pacific Beach...lots of eye candy down there:wink: But parking is at a premium. That is the trouble with the areas near the beach.

Here is one that looked like a deal in Carlsbad

Or this
