I found one prior owner here on the forum, but it looks like it has a few owners before. I'd normally be concerned but the Carfax is showing all service repair records and nothing out of normal. Seems safe but I like to do my homework. I've run the VIN in google and only come up with the prior owner. Thanks!

I think that's a small confusion. The seller openly claims that she is listing the car for her son, so maybe a possible miscommunication.

I've analyzed the Carfax report pretty thoroughly. I was only able to find the previous owner via google, and no others. But I extrapolated the ownership through the records on the report. The current seller is the 5th owner. The first owner had the car through June 1999, second through Sept 2003 and the last 3 owners all between 2004-2009. Some services are not specified, just generalized, but others show a clutch replacement in 2002 at 103k miles.

This is usally too many owners for me, but the maintenance records do make me a little more comfortable. The main problem I'm at now is the clutch. I found posts by the previous owner stating it was sometimes hard to get out of 1st or 2nd gear. His mileage would be after the clutch change record (120k-ish versus 103k clutch change). That leads me to believe that the clutch replacement is no longer a benefit.

Also, I noticed that owner three had registration updated every year due to "moving to new location" and that leads me to believe that owner lived in apartments (typical one year lease) and stored the car in a parking lot.

Then again, the price is reasonable, so maybe I shouldn't expect a better history?

- Timing belt was done at 80-90k miles, but that was in 2001 according to carfax. Meaning, it's time for a new one by years and not miles
- Seller states no mechanical issues, but I specifically asked about the window regulators and they admitted they were on the way out.
- Owner number 3 appeared to have updated registration every year for 3 years. Carfax says due to owner moving location. Thus, I can reasonably conclude it was owned by someone living in apartments and thus there is a high likelihood that it was not garaged during those years.
- Lastly, the carfax shows clutch replacement just after 100k miles. However, the previous owner posted on these forums a couple of times about possible clutch issues and shifting out of 1st/2nd. He owned it until 122k miles.

So there is about $5k in repairs that are likely needed. No thanks

Well, if you explain all of this and they agree to take 5K off the price and you get that stuff done yourself, then you have a pretty nice car that needs no work for a very long time. They are not major problems, just things that go with age and use. Something to think about.

exactly. assume that these items will all need to be done and get an estimate. then, deduct this amount from your offer. i spent $3100 for new clutch, timing belt, water pump, plugs,transmission and motor oil change FWIW.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I just picked up one from Chicago this weekend. It's a looker but it needs a lot to be in the condition it was described in.
