The Rise of Honda in the collector car market

Everyone knows that the NSX is going up in value - that's pretty much standard wisdom. The more interesting story though is the rise of other Honda passenger cars in the collectors market. Here are 3 simple examples of Hondas starting to get some time in the spotlight:

2001 Honda Prelude sold for $12,500

Excellent example of a very nice Prelude that hasn't been extensively modded. For those who don't know the Prelude market, you can typically pick up one for between $2,000 - $5,000, so this is a very notable sale and indicates someone buying with passion at a point in their life where they can afford something nice.

2000 Honda Civic Si sold for $15,500

For most people around my age, this is an average hum-drum car that we have seen a million of and not something you would expect to fetch $15k. This is a real benchmark sale and makes you wonder if the rise of import collect ability has started.

Another Prelude, this one is pearl white with a leather interior. The bidding has opened at $5k, but I suspect it will reach 5 figures before the auction is over.

We may be seeing a real turn in the market of collector cars that will be interesting to watch.

I called the Prelude hypothesis 7-8 years ago. With a production of 58,118 [according to wikipedia], I am going to call that a strong contender. I don't necessarily think they will ever be worth a lot of money, but that in the next 10-15 years, people will stop crushing them and start restoring them instead, realizing how good they were, and their low production.

I also think the S2000 and NSX will forever be valuable, they are so unique and well engineered. I have heard almost nothing negative about the S2000.

Goodness gracious I miss when Hondas had attractive fascias and looked like Hondas inside and out and completely unlike any other car. If I were in need of a commuter car and had a budget of $10 to $17,000, I can't say I find any of those purchases the least bit odd, even if they are destined for low mileage collector use vs. my example.

I miss my old bb6 prelude. However, I do not miss it's lame low hp front wheel drive power train. But a great vehicle non the less.
