The new BMW M5 - has anyone here driven one?

Drove the M6 several of times, same engine completely different cars.

The M6/M5 engine is outstanding, I would love more torque between 1000-4000 revs, I don't like the idle noise and the normal sound <4000revs. If you floor it and rev over 8000 you experience something new. At least it was new for me, I never knew that kind of power from a self-induced engine. It keeps on pushing you into your seat and you would expect the accerlation to slow down like you know from other cars but it doesn't - you get pressed harder into the seats the higher the revs climb.
The brakes peel your skin off the ABS never cut in so I guess the grip is pretty phenomenal. The SMGII rocks - downshifting never made so much fun. Picture this I was on the way through a little town and an old couple wanted to cross the street - thinking about the bad BMW image I thought I brake and let them cross, I did not think about the SMGII so as they were in the middle of the road I pulled the downshift pedal and the car tapped the throttle while changing one gear down. I swear I've never seen some old people getting over the street so fast before in my life.

Oh and by the way I love your avatar. :)

Nicht! M2?!?

I have a friend out in SoCal' who's from a racing-pedigree & privileged background. His father, a former motorsport enthusiast himself acquired one the first new M5's in the country a few months ago. He returned it to the dealer the following weekend. The SMG was unbearable, as so he said. He bought an X3 to drive home in and was considering a Bentley Flying_Spur, last I heard.

That's all I really know about it. I haven't encountered one at the BMW dealership yet. I'm curious to see in-person the subtle differences between it and the more pedestrian 5-series...

The 6-series possibly may take time to grow on me, in terms of styling and overall design. The seats though... omg! Wunderbar! M6 or 997 Carrera (S offered?) would be a challenging choice to make!

Drove the M5 and bought a 645Ci.

Sure the M5 is a rocket, but too much for a "sedan". Not that BMW will produce a large run of these cars, but too much like the typical 5 series in outward appreance.

The 645Ci is another story. You either love or hate the styling, but the ride and comfort are unmatched. Put it in sport mode and you can drive it hard at the track. Sure its heavier and aimed at a different market, but a much better car.

By the way, I use my NSX for casual track days and a Radical for pure racing. At 37, I may be the youngest 645Ci owner around and it is a great ride.

My buddy just picked his new M5 a couple days ago. I can't wait for him to break it in, and then try it out in a few weeks.

I'll post results here.

Really freaking fast!! My friend Dominic brought over his new silver '06 M5 a month or so ago...it only had about 115 miles on it, so not broken in, but VERY fast....WOW!!

I also like the hugging seat option....anyone who has been in a new M5 while taking a corner hard knows what I mean. ;)

Oligo, I take it you are in biotech by your name. What do you do to have 6 series, an NSX, and Radical? No Noble & Exige yet??

Biotech no - why Oligo? I am a two year survivor of brain cancer called anaplastic oligodendrogliomo.

The NSX was a gift to myself on the last day of chemo (12 straight months). The Radical satisfies my racing appetite and I bought this after 6 straight weeks of radiation and chemo combined.

The BMW was a much needed daily driver after 11 years and 178,000 miles in a Nissan Maxima. I also own a '61 Austin Healey BT-7 with 39,000 original miles numbers matching. Great for weekend shows.

You only live once and the point is to enjoy today. I grew up outside of Indy and always wanted to race. Fortunately, I now have financial means to do it.

No more cars in the near future - however a Noble or Ariel Atom would fit the bill.

life in the fastlane...

Oligo-peptides (oligonucleotide ~ Mol. Bio / BioTech)
Oligo-dendrocytes (type of neuron /brain-cell)

Anywayz... congratz' on keepin' on keepin' on! I'm going to fwd your post to a good friend for inspiration...

The 645Ci is conv. or coupe? If a coupe, electrochromatic roof?

Wow, Oligo. Very powerful story. Good luck to you. Your logic makes good sense.

My wife is pushing me to trade the NSX for a new M5, strictly for the ability to haul kids around.

Im not havin' it!

Sure, the car is fast, but its boring. I dont think that I could fall asleep faster in my bed than I could gazing at an M5.

Plus, Ive spent time on the M5 boards reading about iDrive. That thing, while seemingly very capable of giving you a personalized car, just seems like a PITA.

I think iDrive was created because after months of deliberating the minutia, BMW designers couldnt come to a consensus.

I make enough decisions each day - I dont need to deal with that madness.

The 645 is a coupe with the roof. It opens from the rear but does not fully retract like a typical sunroof. Surprisingly, it allows good airflow through the cabin even with the door windows up.

I was concerned about iDrive, but I must admit it is rather simple. The key is to program the steering wheel controls that operate the system. Once you have those programmed it makes controlling the car simple. This is the latest generation of iDrive and it is vastly improved. Really isn't that bad for all the press it receives.
