The KEYS for a 2000 NSX...

I received a total of four keys with my used 2000 NSX-T. Two were normal keys, one was a valet key and one was sealed marked for duplication purposes only.

Yeah, you should have received four keys (two normal, a valet, and the master key). And if you got keyless, you should have two remotes.

Starting with '97 model year the all-metal keys are gone because the newer cars have a transponder in the plastic key head. It's a theft-deterrent. So even if you copy the key or bust open the steering column and force the ignition, the car will not start since it doesn't see the proper transponder code.

Did you buy the car from an individual or a dealer? You should go back to the person or dealer you bought it from and question where the other keys are. I can understand maybe loosing one key if it was a '91, but you bought a 2k model which should have ALL KEYS. Good Luck

I'm purchasing the car through a dealer who is handling the car on a consignment sale. I haven't taken delivery of the car yet - expect to do so on Tuesday (11/14). Without going into too much detail, the car is being sold as a result of "tension between family members". I have spoken to the dealer and it seems he is making a good effort to get the keys for me.

If the dealer comes through and gets the keys, then there's no problem. But what if the dealer is unsuccessful and can't get the other keys?

First of all, the condition of the car (and the price) are just too good to turn down... so even if I only get one key, I'm still going to take delivery of this car

.

If I don't get the other keys, I see two problems, 1) how do I get replacement keys made, and 2) what about the other original keys - out there somewhere - in someone else's hands, who could just walk up and drive my car away?

I realize that this is a very rare instance and not too many people have been in this situation... if at all.

If I don't get the other keys and it is an easy (and inexpensive) process for me to "fix it" myself, then I will. But I don't know how the Acura "key replacement" process works in a case like this and I need to know how big of a fuss to make if the dealer is unsuccessful at getting the keys.

So, I was hoping to gather some information so I could make an informed reaction...
  • How will I make duplicate keys?
  • Is it as simple as just ordering a replacement "Master" key?
  • Will I have to replace the "immobilizer receiver" and get a new set of keys?
  • How much does the "immobilizer receiver" cost?
  • Etc.

Any Acura dealer can duplicate any of the keys for you. Replacing the transponder one will be expensive, though I do not know exactly how much.

My dealer said that if I lost the Red key for my 2000 NSX I'd be looking at $500 - didn't ask if this was for a replacement key only or a re-key and entire new set.

I'd hate to own a car with a single, non duplicatable key. For instance, just a couple of weeks ago a friend bent my NSX key so it would no longer start the car. No clue how it happened.
