the difference between supercar(exotic car) and sportscar

Is it just me?

Nowadays, because sportscars(Corvette and GT-R for example) are so fast that Ferrari and Lambo are less attractive? Even Mustang is pushing like 560hp? for GT500?

Back in the day, maybe like 90s or 80s...the differences between supercars and sportscars were more distinctive.

Like... Supra, Corvette, 300ZX, RX-7, NSX, Mustang, Camaro, Viper, 3000GT VR-4, etc...weren't nearly special/fast/exotic as XJ220, Diablo, EB110, F50, 911 GT1, Vector, McLaren, etc...

The GT-R you could argue is a supercar.
The Corvette Z06 you could maybe argue is almost a supercar(the only problem, IMO, is it's just a hopped up version of a sports car vs a specially built car designed solely as a supercar).

The base model Corvette only does something like a 12.5 1/4 mile.
The GT500 with its 500hp is a 12.9 1/4 mile(same as a 14 year old NSX).

Compare to NEW supercars:
2011 911 Turbo: 11.0 1/4 mile
2010 Lamborghini Murcielago 11.0
2008 Ferrari F430 11.7

1.5-2 seconds is huge... And note, this is only straight line speed. At least for the GT500, throw in some bends, and it's done.

I think what we see is sports car catch up after 10-15 years to current supercars, but supercars always progress...
It's nothing new. A 2000 Integra Type-R runs about the same 1/4 as a 1989 Ferrari Testarossa.

How fast can they go is my question? Will the next generation of supercars run 9s?

Well, I think of "Sports Car" as the superset. A subset of "Sports Car" is "Exotic" and "Supercar" both of which aren't mutually exclusive, because some cars fit both, some cars only fit only one.

The NSX to me, is 1) A sports car 2) an exotic 3) NOT a supercar

By this definition, GT-R & Corvette ZR-1s are super cars. I personally wouldn't consider them Exotic though.

I love the NSX and all, but running 12.9 stock? I think I'd have to see that one to believe it.

Car and Driver did it look it up. Many NSX type S and type S zero plus the NA2 R run 12.9 or better. I think i saw a 12.4 once. I'm sure the trap speed is around 110-112 max.

There was a member a long time ago that ran high 12s (12.7 or 12.8) in a NSX NA2 coupe with just H/E and he trapped almost 112.

0-60 , 1/4 times

1991 Acura NSX 5.8 14.4
1992 Acura NSX 5.6 13.9
1993 Acura NSX 5.6 13.9
1994 Acura NSX 5.3 13.6
1996 Acura NSX 5.2 13.8
1996 Acura NSX-T 5.8 14.3
1997 Acura NSX-T 4.8 13.3
2001 Acura NSX V6 4.5 12.9 (C&D)
2002 Acura NSX 4.8 13.4

I wonder what made the 2002 about half a sec faster than the other years...?

Ya, its published in C&D, but I'd still really like to see a stock U.S. spec NSX run a 12.9. Theres no doubt the NSX is awesome around a track, but dragstrips are not exactly its forte.

oh and to get back on topic... corvette = sportscar (all models), NSX = exotic car look, with sports car speed.

exotic cars IMO is all about prestige of ownership. keep in mind that "exotic" doesn't always mean good. it just means different.

I know, but exotic cars usually means high performance cars that are much faster than sportscars driving around on the street..in my personal opinion anyways.

would you consider Mitsuoka Bubu as an exotic car?

I did couple of runs on my Dynolicious app, and I got 13.0x 1/4 mile. I heard it is very accurate. Needless to say I was very surprised by that number considering it was done on the street.

Back to topic, an old car no longer out perform the new does means it will lose the title of being an exotic car. It is the way it is designed, build, and performed during the era it was created. For example, the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959 will always be that special car in the hearts of many. NSX was the first to have special material as a mass produced car in which others followed. The contribution to the industry is immense. If you look back, let's say Road and Track magazine and check out the 0-60 mph time, NSX was actually on the top 5% or so for 12 years, that is rather remarkable. I remember the 2002 issue where the only car that was faster were Lamborghi Murcierlargo, Gallardo, Ferrari Enzo/360, Porsche Turbo, Mclaren F1. Cars to match were M3/M5, some of the AMG MB, but that's about it.

That is quite a record for a car that was 12 years old.

NSX is a super and exotic car, the only thing on that car was not was the badges.

NSX = exotic car look, with sports car speed.

The NSX was just as fast or faster than any other supercar when made.

And once a supercar, always a supercar....

I think one of the limiting factors for bone stock NSX's of all vintages were the OEM tyre sizes! Get decent width on the rear and the 1/4 mile times will be better than stock. Just don't overdo the size increase
