I was looking for something in my NSX Prime gmail account today and noticed that there are a huge number of people who continue to reply to PM notifications via e-mail. I normally don't see them because I have a filter set up that automatically deletes them.

Replying to them doesn't work - the reply just goes into my gmail trash folder.

I suspect some people realize their mistake after they send the e-mail, but I am guessing many people never realize what has happened, and since the e-mail doesn't bounce back to them as undeliverable there is a real potential for communication breakdown. Unfortunately gmail does not currently support autoresponders based on filters so I can't set up anything on gmail to bounce those messages back to people.

Doing a quick search I see dozens of people a month are making this mistake.

I tried to avoid this by putting the following in four different places in each PM notifcation plus a couple additional lines explaining that you can't reply to these notification e-mails. Here is an example with the user name of the person who sent me the PM x'd out:

Dear NSX Prime,

You have received a new private message at NSX Prime from XXXXXXXXXX, entitled "hi".

To read the original version, respond to, or delete this message, you must log in here:
http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/private.php

This is the message that was sent:
---------------------
can you delete some of my personal info off some old posts i cannot edit?
---------------------

***** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL! *****
***** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL! *****
***** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL! *****

Again, please do not reply to this email. You must go to the following page to reply to this private message:
http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/private.php

You received this e-mail because you set your account on NSX Prime to notify you via e-mail when you receive a PM. If you do not wish to receive these e-mail notifications, adjust your account setting here: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions

All the best,
NSX Prime

..but of course half the people never bother to read anything, and others are just in the habit of hitting "reply" when they want to respond to something that comes via e-mail.

The only solution that comes to mind is to modify the template so that it does not show you the actual contents of the PM in the notification e-mail. It would still show who sent you the PM and the title of the PM but I can have it stop showing the contents. This disables one of the conveniences of the PM notification e-mail, but it would basically force people to log in to PM to read the message. I think this would virtually eliminate people trying to reply to PMs via e-mail. It would have the side benefit of making the PM notifications much smaller because I would also remove the huge number of notes saying not to reply to the e-mail.

It doesn't really matter either way to me personally, but it appears to be an ongoing problem so I'll put it out there as a poll and get some feedback.

I realize it can be a hassle for you, but I like being able to read the message since 90% of the time I am on the road and am getting the email notification through my phone. It makes it easier for me to know whether I need to log in to send a reply immediately or if it is something that is not urgent and can wait until late in the day/evening when I get in front of a computer.

I realize it can be a hassle for you

Just to clarify, it is not a hassle for me either way. As it stands now replies to PM notifications just get filtered straight into my trash on gmail so I don't even see them.

I only ran across a few because I was searching for something so I decided to see how many people were making that mistake.

I was simply trying to come up with a way to solve the problem, but the only reasonable solution I can think of has a down-side as well (loss of the convenience you mentioned), so I figured I'd get some feedback from users.

I like being to be able to read the PM text via e-mail as well. Same issue as Robert, I'm often reading e-mails on my phone.

Hi

I often read my mails on the cellphone too so I want it to stay the way it is.

Regards

I also like it the way it is.

BTW, it seems like there has been an increase in the number of PMs and emails I get from people interested in buying a part or NSX on the marketplace.

For some reason, they think that I (and presumably other moderators) are selling the item instead of the person that posted the ad.

It used to never happen, but has probably happened 4 times in the last few months.

I sometimes do a reply on the do not replay PM notification E-mails when I am not paying attention. I do like to get notified when I get a PM because it's normally someone that needs a speaker or CCU repair. I will have to log-in to NSXprime to respond so having the contents on the PM in the email is unnecessary for me.

Since you said an autoresponder won't work, what's the downside of setting the from address to one that does not exist (eg [email protected])?

If folks hit reply and send a message, you should get a bounce back stating the message could not be delivered.

E-mails make a lot more sense to me than using Private Messaging since with the way the forums software works, your e-mail address is hidden. I'm not sure why PM is so popular.

By placing the PM message in the e-mail, you're sort of going against the idea of private messaging which in my opinion is to have a website-based communication system. By making the user return to the website to use the PM function, you're allowing them to work in the mindset of communicating through the website.

If that doesn't work, why not have the reply to e-mail address set to an address like [email protected] - I'd assume your domain host would have an ability to do an auto-reply.

With vBulletin you set the system admin e-mail address in one place. If I set it to something bogus it will break a lot of other stuff. I think it would be a code mod, not just a template mod, to change the sender on those e-mails. I'm not willing to modify the vBulletin code over this issue. I will double check to make sure I can't change it in the template.

I agree with NSXGeek! in that I don't understand why people like PM. It's worse than e-mail in pretty much every way in my opinion. But that's not the issue at hand...

Huh? Then disable PM and have people use the e-mail feature instead...

I am all about the least amount of steps to get the same thing done. If the message comes email and gets returned email it's less steps then getting the email, clicking on the link, opening up Prime and then returning the message.

But it's all good. Whatever is easy for you is good for me. Thanks again Lud for dedicating so much time to this site.

I vote to keep it the way it is. It allows members to view the message they have with their normal email, versus having to log in to view it. I don't get email on the road, but it would be convenient to have it stay within the email if others are using that method.

As far as getting rid of PMs, PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOO! I don't have access to my personal email during the day so that would leave me cut off.

Unlike on NSX Prime, our PMs don't have the message in the email because it's confusing to our members.

I for one have replied knowing it says "Do not reply", but if a Mod. deletes a post of mine {usually an unessassry comment} I still feel the need to opoligize for it.
