i was going through some stuff on my second level in my garage and moved some boxes. unfortunately one of the boxes got caught on the leg of my tripod construction light and flung it over the edge landing directly on my drivers quarter panel. i couldn't look for several minutes. how stupid could i be? damn.
anyway, damage is less than it sounded. however, i don't know how if it can be fixed properly (being aluminum and all) without replacing the quarter panel?
any ideas?
in addition, the trunk now has a little dent.

i'm about as stupid as they come.

oh well, life goes on...

That does suck. I have a small garage with tools hung around and have caught my share of falling objects. On top of that I have 3 kids (4/2/1) with bikes hung up that they try to get down and stuff that they are constantly dragging by my car - so it is only a matter of time for me until I have something like this too.

Anyway - I would definately talk to a reputable dent repair place near you. I have used the one associated with my Acura dealer and they did FANTASTIC work on a door ding and showed me some of the other dents they repaired on other Acuras. I was completely impressed and others have reported similar results. I would definately try this before getting insurance involved, bondo or new panels, repaint and blend, etc.

Good luck - as you say - life goes on...

thanks matteni.
i'll give it a shot. however, unfortunately, i think the crease is a bit much for a dent repair shop.

maybe this can be seen as an opportunity to upgrade to aftermarket body parts. though, i am not too fond of the rear aftermarket stuff. front fenders / hood would have been much better! :^)
the irony to that is i haven't parked backwards in months, and that one day...that dreadful day...

:^(

do you have a pic of it? maybe by posting the pix.. more people could give you somre other ideas about it..

Last Sat, I had a similar thing happen with me and my rear quarter panel but it was someone who had hit me and ran. I was amazed how easy it was to bend mostly back into place but I was a bit upset no one stayed or left a note. Shows what kind of people there are in the world. I was no further than 30' the whole time at the museum's park.

Anyone know of a excellent place in Dallas to get it fixed.

Also, i thought about the after market parts but then that means larger rims and tires. HMMMM bummer!

Don't expect it to make it perfect. Instead, spend a little more for a PDR (paintless dent repair) expert who can do the job perfectly. PDR is still very inexpensive. You can spend $30 for something that will still leave it visible, or $60 or so to make it go away entirely. Should be a no-brainer.

sorry for the delay. here are the pics.

it was difficult to get the dent to really show in the photos.

what's the verdict? dent master or something like that?

thanks

I would find a top end dent repair shop that also has paint touch up capabilities. I believe they can pull that dent, air-brush/blend the spot and make it look damn near like new.

It will not be cheap or easy to find the "best" but a lot better then a new panel, a wider repaint, or bondo IMO. The best shops will also be honest and turn you away if they can't make it perfect on your NSX as their reputation is worth more then the couple hundred bucks.

I don't know, Nick - that looks pretty serious to me, and I'm not so sure a paintless repair will work.

At a minimum, I would check with a top-notch body shop in your area (preferably one with NSX experience) and get their advice. I think you'll probably wind up going that route if you want to do it right. Keep in mind that you may want to file a comprehensive claim with insurance if the cost is high.

OUCH! Poor baby! That really hits home, especially since your NSX looks just like my baby. Get her fixed ASAP!

thanks for the reply guys. ken, i was considering filing a claim. i wonder if i can file it under a home owners since the light fell off of the landing in my garage?

I see the line of trunk panel and driverside 1.4 panel not matching well.. somewhat bended.. is that because of the dent too?

I think that would apply if it happened to someone other than the insured's vehicle, say a guest.

I agree. Most homeowner's policies are pretty specific about what kind of damages they cover - fire, theft, etc. I don't know if a household accident that damages one of your household belongings is normally covered by a homeowner's policy.

Two other points though:

1. When you're not sure which of two different policies covers something, you can report it to both companies and let them figure it out.

2. If, like most folks, the same company writes both your policies, you can just report it to them and let them figure it out.

I think it's likely to wind up on the auto policy, though.

In any case, I would advise first figuring out how you want it fixed and finding out how much it's going to cost (and doing this right away). Then, if it's worth putting in a claim, you can report it to insurance (and, if not, don't).

good point ken, i'll get a quote asap.
the reason i thought of the homeowners policy is because a friend of mine had a similar (much worse) incident. he had several hundred pounds of storage fall onto his truck causing major damage to his front-end, hood, fenders, etc. his homeowners covered it. but, that's probably irrelevant in my case since i do have the same carrier for both auto and home. like ken said, i'll let them figure it out. hate to see the rate go up though.

boston nsx, the line you see between the trunk and quarter must be an illusion due to the camera angle.

thanks again,
james
