Stupid stripped bolt in a BAD location!

Ok, so I'm installing my headers, and everything is going fine (well, as fine as it can go with my limited mechanical ability), and I end up stripping a bolt. Now biggie, I've done this before and just drilled the MFer out. Well this time that isn't really an option:

Anyone have any good ideas? FYI, this is on the heat shield on the rear exhaust bank, right next to the darn passenger's side axle shaft (I think that's the right terminology)

heat it and put some valve grinding compound in you socket

good luck

I assume you stripped it with a 12 point socket, Try with a 6 point and to may be able to get it.

That would be correct! Ok, I'll give that a shot with some valve grindig compound.

If that doesn't work you may need to find a slightly smaller socket (std, not metric) that you can pry/pound on.

12 point sockets are evil...unless you have a 12 point bolt:wink:

After trying the heat + 6 point socket, smaller SAE socket, and to find a set of bolt extractors I decided to try it the Marine Corps way:

Next Time
Go to sears and pick up their craftsman socket set that they sell the ones with teeth that cut into the striped bolt I think they are like 12 bucks they are great. They have a lifetime warrantee (I cracked the first set they gave me new ones no questions asked). So what I did when I couldn’t get the bolts off my exhaust is take a hammer and tap the socket on this sets the socket deep into the bolt then I used a breaker bar to crack the bolt loose. Also get some of that PB spray that they sell at Homedepo works better then WD-40. Worst case u break the head of the nut off on the manifold u will still be able to remove the shroud that covers the bolts to the block when the manifold is removed u can drill it out if need be. It will be much easier doing this on a bench then under the car with your hand between the firewall and exhaust manifold (been there done that it sucks ) the end result is a job well done and some bloody knuckles ooh and that smile when you start that bad boy up , you know the one u cant get off your face  <That one

Good Luck

I dunno wot it is with men, but when i see realy nice tools as these, i get a little bit ..... well......excited...

That a nice set!!!

I have the same Craftsman set of extractors and i swear by them... every single time, they just bite right into the bolt and take it right out... the grooves in the extractors are in such a way, that the more force you use to loosen the bolt, the more they actually will dig and cut into a bolt to grip onto them. Excellent tool set.

You had butt love with an exhaust pipe?

No, the inside diameter of the pipe is too small!

I wonder how a Gator Grip would fare in this type of situation.

Tried one, it didn't work.

VB, Drifter, & NSR2,

Yeah, I've got to pick those up. I went to Lowes, Home Depot, Autozone, and Car Quest and they didn't carry them. I guess I just should have make the trek to Sears.

BTW: Yeah, PB Blaster is great, I don't use WD-40 for breaking bolts.

I still see the bolt there, so did you break it loose?

Cheers

Nope. Just ripped the heat shield a part so I could get to the exhaust manifold bolts.

I have that thing it dose not work that well

I have this now and it does the trick with bolts that are not stripped. but I have a stripped bolt and it does nothing but spin.

Im trying the hammer and smaller socket method first. Then im using the ideas ive found here,

THANK YOU very much for using the search feature, but I think you probably used a breaker bar to break it loose and "broke" the bolt.?
