Struggling with a keep it or sell it decision...

I love my '92 NSX. ISONSX (it's prior owner) and I have taken exquisite care of it and the car's beautiful and I love owning it, driving it, talking about it... However, I keep having thoughts about selling it for the following reasons:

1) my wife doesn't drive a stick and is now stuck driving our mini-van (which we both love, but it's not exactly fun to drive), meanwhile I have two very fun cars to drive; related to that is:

2) if her car is broken and the NSX is sitting in the garage, she couldn't drive it, thus, if there was ever an emergency, she'd be stuck. She has absolutely no interest or inclination to drive stick, so this is going to be a perpetual problem.

3) As a family, my wife, daughter and I can never go anywhere together in the NSX, so as a result, the NSX rarely gets driven. I do take my daughter to daycare from time to time in it, but it's rare... Also means that the baby seat is installed, so during those times, I have a one seater (once I get to my office, so I can't drive a colleague or client to lunch due to the baby seat).

This all started with my concerns about tracking the NSX, but it has now spiraled into this......

I've contemplated getting a 996 or 993 911 or a Maserati coupe. Both of which are available with automatics (maybe I'd hate that on the track though????) and with back seats that while tiny, are big enuf for my daughter. The new for me, used car, must be no more than $35K (yup, can you can get a 2002 Mas. for just about that price) and I already have the CTS-V, which is staying in the family no matter what, so I'm not thinking of an M5 or someother 4 door. I want a sports car.

I'm conflicted.....

Nice problem to have, but I'm still struggling over what I want to do.

Not sure how I'd feel as proud of the porsche as I am of the NSX and it certainly has MUCH less aesthetic appeal...

Look forward to your sage counsel...

Since I don't have a family, maybe I am not qualified on answering your question.

But my philosophy has always been, if you are thinking about another car and cannot add to your current garage, then it may be time to move on.
My $0.02

I don't get it... you first said that your cars are the NSX and the minivan... then you say you have a CTS-V? isn't that an automatic 4 door? so whats the problem then? you have 3 cars, right?

We have 3 cars. The CTS-V has a 6 speed Tremec manual transmission. Thus, she can't drive that one either...

make her learn now to drive a stick.

what would she do if she got stuck somewhere and the only car she could get a hold of in an emergency was a stick? its one thing to not WANT to drive a stick, but to not be able to in an emergency is a silly thing IMO.

Teach her to drive stick just for emergencies. She needs to learn anyway. Give her a gift/present once she does or something for incentive.

Sell the cadillac and get an M3 SMG or something else sporty but with four seats and an auto/semi auto tranny.

I can't see selling the NSX and keeping the cadillac, the NSX is a much rarer car and will maintain its value, also imagine that its more fun to drive, but I haven't driven that caddy so I guess thats all in what you want. So compromise with the caddy and get something that works for both of you. Although her refusal to drive stick would annoy me.

Believe me, I've tried. She's not having it.

In response to why do we have the CTS-V? That's my DD.

In any event, even were she to learn to drive stick, I still have the issue that the NSX is not getting driven much because we cannot all go out together in it.

The Caddy is staying... Long story, but it stays in the family.

Her refusal to drive stick is her choice. I'm okay with it. Most cars are automatics, just happens not to be the majority of the ones we own... Again, focusing on the other issue, her lack of interest in driving a manual trans. is only part of the issue...

You guys are great ... The dialog is helpful (well, not the divorce ones, but those are entertaining).

Well um OK so that is pretty limiting as far as which car goes. Do you need the minivan? what about another car for her SUV or something?

How does the Cadillac shift? is it clutchless? Is that something she can learn as opposed to a traditional manual?

I am sorry but it would kill me to sell my NSX, I have pretty much said unless I move to a place where I can't have it I am keeping it for life...and even then I might give it to my brother so it stays in the family.

if she would rather you sell your nsx than learn to drive a stick then buy her a auto civic hatch and tell her to enjoy

Say it isnt so!

I should have known something was up when you showed up at the last meet with the Caddy!

Just buy another car for your wife!

From what I can understand, you are debating about keeping the NSX. The Caddy must stay and is a stick so your wife can't drive it. The minivan is the only thing that she can drive and maybe having reliability issue.

Between the NSX/Caddy, I'd definitely keep the NSX given that I think it's easier to replace the Caddy vs a clean or same condition NSX that you currently have.

Can you trade the Caddy for an automatic? If not, how about trading the minivan for something else? If you are concerned about reliabilty of the minivan, maybe it's time for it to go anyways. That was the concern you originally had for the wife to be stranded if the only car she can drive is broken, right?

In terms of trading options at ~$35k. You can pick up a small Toyota Yaris, or similar sized 4 passenger car for less than $20. I think those are reliable, and will run forever, and takes a good beating. I'd look into used ones to be even more economical. Ofcourse you'll have to consider preference, model, style..etc on your way.

Just my $0.02.

SO............your a PIMP and Rollin on 22" Dubs?

Have to haul that ass? NSX>Any Caddy

Problem solved!!! Trade the minivan for something newer or more reliable! That's it!
You get to keep the caddy and the NSX..

Now, Tell me if there's a problem there...

Guys:

couple of points:

1) the minivan is new and is fantastic. It's reliable, this is a mere what if scenario.

2) we're not addressing the fact that the nsx just sits waiting for me to drive it on the rare occasion that I can, which is rare. A 911 would allow us to all go for sunday drives. Yeah, we can do that in the Caddy or the minivan, but it seems like a bit of waste to have this beautiful car just sitting becaues the situation so often doesn't permit me to take it (bad weather, the need for wifey and daughter to travel with me).

On the other hand, when I got home and saw the NSX sitting in the garage looking sooo purty, it's hard to imagine it not being there!

I didn't read all the other posts thoroughly, but how about daily driving the NSX, and changing the Cadillac to something else sporty that your wife can drive as well?

So instead of your NSX, which never gets driven, you're going to buy a 2002 auto-break-o-matic Maseratti to put all those miles on?? At least you can look at the NSX in YOUR garage for free.

I can understand the backseat thing - sounds like the 911 is the way to go.

You mentioned that you drive your daughter in the NSX. I am selling my 911 (2001) next week and buying an NSX. I am having my first child in March. I already bought the Porsche "baby safe" seat for the 911 in anticipation of the new guy coming along but came across a VERY low mileage NSX (97' with 9500 miles) that I fell in love with it. I have already put the deal together on the 911 and the NSX. My question is how do you drive your daughter in the NSX??? The Porsche has a special bar that the dealer installs that disables the airbag. Have you found a way to diasable the airbag in the NSX?

If so I will be the happiest guy in San Diego!

P.S. What car seat do you use in the NSX?? Thanks, Dennis
