straight pipes for cat

Has anyone run the comptech straight pipes with stock muffler and have feedback on the loudness, raspy, etc.

I understand it will minimally affect horsepower by 6HP peak at high RPM. This would indicate the cats are not resrictive.

Scott,
While I can't attest to the C-tech cat bypass pipes with a stock muffler, I can tell you the difference they make with aftermarket exhaust. I bought my car with C-tech headers and cat-back exhaust already installed. After about four months I installed the bypass pipes. The car is significantly louder from idle to redline and there is a definite edge to the exhaust note that didn't exist before. "Raspy" would be a very good descriptive word for the effect. You may want to see if a local exhaust shop can fabricate the bypass pipes for you out of stainless...you may save yourself a good deal of $$$...which of course can go for more mods! Good luck.

TampaBayNSX-R,
Thanks for the reply. Anyone out there know where to get bypass pipes besides comptech? Anyone have experience with a supertrap set up?

HI SCOTT,
I'VE INSTALLED THE C-TECH BYPASS PIPES ON MY NSX; HOWEVER, IT WAS PUT IN ALL AT ONCE WITH MY K&N CONE FILTER AND R.M. RACING EXHAUST AND SO I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE DIFFERENTIAL ON SOUND AND H.P. WHAT I DO KNOW IS THIS SETUP IS LOUD AND PROUD. THERE IS ONE MAJOR DRAWBACK AND THAT IS WITH NO CATALYTIC CONVERTER THE FUMES ARE VERY STRONG AND THATS NOTICEABLE WHILE SITTING INSIDE THE CAR.

I have an aftermarket exhaust and the bypass pipes and there was no difference in the smell of the exhaust. You may have a leak somewhere. Is the sound really raspy? If so, I would definately check the seals at each joint in the exhaust. It is not uncommon to have a slight leak if you have replaced several parts at once.

I am leaning torward the RM headers and exhaust. I see most people with dyno tests running this exhaust. I like the positive proof of the dyno test.

RM Exhaust does it sound like a Formula 1 car? How about when it is on vtech at 6k-8k?

Scott, if you want to hear the RM exhaust with DTM tips in person let me know. We're not that far from each other. I'm in the Beaverton area a lot also.

Will hopefully have the RM headers by next summer.

Hey this is great, when I first starting posting here I didnt see anyone from the WA-OR area..now I've talked quite of a few of them. I'd also be interested in hearing an RM exhaust if possible...

I loved the sound of the RM exhaust. I ran it both with, and without cats. Without cats it was pretty loud.. but i liked it. It sounds very good, without sounding like a civic with 5" exhaust tip.

Although, with the comptech test pipes installed, i could smell the exhaust alot more, but only when parking in my garage.. not outside, or from inside the car.

There are a couple vids on my site of my car with the rm exhaust w/ cats (never had a chance to record anything without the cats) that have sound.

Mike,

Try drinking beer! It gives a better buzz than huffing on fumes in the garage.

Sweet ride. I like your rims. I wish I would have bought your car with all the goods installed. Did you also have the RM headers? I'll be checking your site out.

Thanks for the compliment, i had the stock headers on the car. I hadnt upgraded headers because i heard conflicting reports as to the actual gain. Although, that was going to be my next upgrade.. with the intake, exhaust, and no cats, i think installation of the headers would have put the car at around 265rwhp.. which would have been decent.

I just ordered the RM exhaust. Will slap that bad boy on in the next couple weeks. I was also looking at the dyno numbers on the headers as far as actual improvement. It looks like exhaust will yield the largest gains. I was amazed to find the NSX does not come stock with headers. This is a performance car after all! But the lack of conclusive proof on headers performance gain is disapointing ie. means they probably do nothing. It is typically tough to exceed the original design engineers performance in this regard. Even though they did not use headers the stock manifold probably flows about as good as can be done. I have yet to see conclusive proof otherwise. On V4, V8 platforms the only way to go was with the tri-Y configuration. But with a V-6 I do not know what to do. I wish there was some better dyno data as far as comparing stock configuratations to headers only.

I am amazed how many "local" posters I see here, I would just like to see your cars some time if you get together at all in the area

Sweet! Another compadre of the NSX variety. We might have to get a club or something going on in the Portland metro area. Actually just hanging out would be better since it would not require the time requirements of a club.

My idea is we should pick a weekend and go for a drive up to Mt St Helens or HWY14 or where ever and then finish it off at Beaches on the Columbia for some happy hour grub and beers!

I would love to check out your rides!

It seems like right when I bought my exclusive NSX everybody and their grandma now has one! What the hell? They are all over the place. I have seen a yellow T, a couple white ones, three black, four reds, couple silver, and a blue. Must be those Intel stock options.... The silicon forest likes NSX.

I am considering joining the Lotus or the Alpha club and doing some laps at Portland International.

Or, you could join the NSX Club of America (http://www.nsxca.org) and hold events through that club. There are already 16 club members in Oregon and if you're holding a club event (even something simple like a dinner at a restaurant) you could invite all of them.

I haven't participated with either one of those clubs yet, but I'm sure you'd have fun. I have driven in my first two track events out at PIR this summer and have had a blast (TC & Porshe Club), I only wish I've had more Friday's available to participate in others. You might want to check out http://207.71.108.169/tcdrvtng.htm Team Continental was the first track event I participated in and I had a blast...learned alot! There next Saturday event is October 21st.

I've stopped by to a few other club events also at PIR and there always seems to be NSX's there...got a ride in a SC NSX for a 20 minute session during a Shelby Club event...what a rush!

Hey TES, E-mail me with some info on how to get in touch with those guys. I want to hit the track at least once before the rainy season starts.
