Stock head unit security?

OK, so... I'm mostly done with my new stereo install and put the stock head unit back into the car on the new wiring harness. I turn it on..... antenna goes up (no smartenna installed yet :P), I shut it off, antenna goes down. HU itself never light up.

OK next guess, the aftermarket wiring adapters are missing a few pins, one of which is labelled "security unit". Not being sure what this is, I rewire the harnesses to make sure this is now reconnected. Same thing.

Now I do what I should have done in the first place, hook the head unit back up to the stock connectors eliminating everything I've done. Same thing!!!

Now I'm wondering, is this one of those head units where if it loses power for X hours, you have to enter some sort of security code to reactivate it? I've never heard of such a thing on the list, the FAQ or this board, but I have no other answer as to why the HU no longer works. Then again, I'd think it would still like up and just display some sort of error if it was expecting a security code, rather than remain completely dead.

Sigh, just when I thought I was going to have tunes again.........

its worse than i thought ... the HU does indeed work.. AM FM and CD, it just had no illumination. the orange face plate is completely out

. (no, its not the dimmer switch)

found the problem, im just not sure of the solution yet.

i had to remove the faceplate of the radio to tighten the loose volume knob. the faceplate doesnt come all the way off because its anchored in place by two very thin ribbon cables (not even really cables, more like mylar thats about as thick as window tint). the two cables slide into two recepticles, one of them came dislodged. if i could remove the front of the radio, i could fix it, but i cant remove the front without unplugging both of those... chicken and egg thing. the radio doesnt fit over the two metal poles (tuner and volume) without disconnecting those either... so its like i can do one or the other ..... well at least i figured out whats going on.

problem solved, but it wasnt fun. for reference, forget going in thru the bottom of the head unit. once you remove the plate, the PCB has 4 screws holding it down, and all four have grounds soldered to them.

going in through the top, i had to remove the cassette unit (held in by 4 screws then the unit itself is plugged directly into the unit below via 4 molex connectors). once that was removed, i had access to the ribbon cables.

there was no way to get these back on without doing all this. basically you had to slide a plastic frame forward, slip the ribbons into the sockets, then slide the frames back to lock them into place.

anyway, another obsticle navigated... we're on the home stretch. just need to connect the power wires to the battery and amp and turn it on and see what burns ... ok, thats not funny! looking for proper nuts and bolts around the house now to connect the wires to the battery...... might require yet ANOTHER run to home depot :P (which stupidly i told the fiance so she added in a trip to walmart for me to return stuff, so im trying REALLY hard to find what i need around the house
