Stereo play tapes fast

My stereo plays all tapes too fast. I've tried running a cleaning tape, but it didn't help any. Any tips on what I should do?

Thanks.

My next project, besides new wheels, is upgrading the stereo system. It's a pain not having a cd changer.

My guess is that the pinch roller is either dirty or dried out and not controlling the speed. On tape decks, the speed is controlled by the capstan (thin metal axel) spinning at the correct rate and the pinch roller (rubber wheel) that presses the tape to the capstan. Most cleaning products don't clean the pinch roller very well as the focus on the metal parts. A q-tip and tape cleaner is usualy pretty effective but access is the big problem especially in a car.

mc-ca is on the right track with that one.
If you can get a wooden stick q-tip and some alcohol, just hold open the door flap and get a flashlight and clean the capstan and rubber wheel real well with the alcohol moistened tip.

I've tried this before on the same problem and it fixed it in my case.
