Has anyone investigating steering wheel options?

I have a nice Sparco steering wheel but haven't installed it because I don't want to lose the airbag.

I want to get a new steering wheel so I can have something smaller with a better feel. I also want to have the red/black leather look.

J,
I am thinking the same thing as you. As far as the air bag goes, I crashed my last NSX into a tree at about 40mph, the air bag blew and due to how far I (and due to how the cockpit is configured, probably most of us) sit from the wheel, it had no affect on me. The seat belt tightened (breaking a rib!) and the whole thing was a non-issue for me. The car was totaled. If you need a steering wheel hub for that wheel you have, let me know, I will get you the email address of a company that sells one, it looks nice, for about $250. There is nothing like a smaller diameter, thick rim wheel to add dramatically to the driving feel. I decided just last night that I am going to go ahead and do it.

or you could get one from ScienceofSpeed for $195:

I've been wanting to get a new wheel and hub for some time now, but
I can't decide if I should get the harness bar and seat+seat rails first.
Justin, have you gotten a harness bar and harnesses yet?

I think if you drive the NSX at the track, its preferable not to have
a airbag... this is what I've heard from others.

kenji, I am going to sit in andrie's seat this weekend and then order if I like them.

I am not going to get a harness bar, I am just going to drill through the firewall. I'll change this configuration if I get a full roll cage.

I'll be selling my current OEM wheel along with the current OEM seats.

I always experienced a lot of lateral sliding on the stock seats. A 5th point took care of some of this, however, the race shells really keep you in place even with out a 5th and 6th point. After talking to a lot of people and seeing crash results, I decided upon suggestions to not put a harness system in the NSX. The theory goes that in the case of a roll-over, a 5th/6th point will hold your neck vertical, not allowing the ability to duct a collapsing roof. With a cage of course, this is not a worry. I feel that the race seats give me better feel and support than stock seats with out using a harness system at this time. I look forward to getting a roll cage in from Japan to mount in the NSX.

Kenji:

I already have another car to beat up at the track so I don't really feel like turning my NSX into a track car.

I plan on putting in Sparco Roadster seats (street seats), a Sparco Lap 3 wheel, and shift knob. All items in my interior are red and black. For the hub, I plan on using a Sparco hub with an NSX modified hub extender (to get the right position).

Justin, are you sure you don't want to have a little fun in your NSX on the track?

Its a LOT of fun! I plan to get either the Recaro SPGs or other comfortable seat... I'm still debating about what steering wheel I'm gonna get. Chris, will your hubs fit any sparco or momo wheel?

Again I disagree on this statement. The stock seat belt in modern cars are design to hol du in place. And they do damn good job at it.

I rolled over a camaro Z26 in a 2 and 1/2 turn ending upside down and the roof collapse. The rear side of the roof is still intact. At the end, I am securely belted on my seat hanging upside down. I came out without even a scratch. Remember this is a Camaro with a T-top.

The harness is simply a tighter version of the seat belt which will help in a higher speed of impact.

And we are supposed to use neck collar or the getting more popular hans device. This device prevents the neck snap in the frontal or side impacts. Which is a more common injury happening in the track or in the road.

That being said, I think a bucket seat with stock seatbelt is very good setup indeed.

Chris, the harness and the seat are actually the key of me kicking ass at local track

Chris, how well does your stock seat belt work over your Recaro SPGs? Does the bucket portion of the seat belt get in the way of the belt going accross your lap?

I just can't fork out buying
rails, seat, harnesses, harness bars, wheel adapter, wheels all at the same time... after those mods, I don't think I'll need to buy anything else for a while... those AP brakes are looking quite tempting though.
